Ravens roll to 10-1 victory in game one, rally for 3-2 win in
10 innings in nightcap
RINDGE, N.H. (March 31,
2007) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 10th in this
week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)
Division II poll and 21st in the Collegiate
Baseball magazine poll, swept a key early season doubleheader
with Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10
Conference baseball action at Dr. Arthur & Martha Pappas Field
this afternoon. Franklin Pierce rolled to a 10-1 victory in game
one, before rallying to a 3-2 extra-innings win in the nightcap.
Senior Vinny Pennell
(Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) was a combined 5-for-6 for
Franklin Pierce with two runs scored, two RBI and three stolen
bases. Classmate Jake Christman (Newton, Mass./Newton
South) hit 4-for-7 in the twinbill with three runs scored,
a double, home run and three RBI.
Sophomore Michael Diaz
(Monroe, Conn./Masuk) was a combined 6-for-9 in the
doubleheader for Southern Connecticut State with a double, triple,
run scored and stolen base.

Franklin Pierce opened a 6-0 lead after two innings and
never looked back in claiming a 10-1 victory in game one
today.
Vinny Pennell was a perfect 4-for-4
at the plate with a double, two stolen bases, two runs scored and
an RBI for the Ravens, while Jake Christman finished 3-4 with two
runs scored, a home run and three RBI. Junior Kevin Renaud
(Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) hit 2-5 with a double,
stolen base and three RBI, while twin brother Keith Renaud
(Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) was 1-4 with two runs
scored, a homer and three RBI.
Sophomore Tom Cote
(Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock Regional) led three Franklin
Pierce pitchers to hold Southern to just one unearned run with
seven shutout innings, scattering three hits and three walks with
three strikeouts to collect his third win (3-1) of the season.
Michael Diaz was 2-for-4 for SCSU
with a double, while junior Paul Izzo (Cohoes,
N.Y./Cohoes) hit 1-4 with a run scored.
Senior Josh Terletcky
(Plainfield, Conn./Plainfield) took the loss (0-5) for the
Owls, surrendering ten runs, all earned, on 11 hits with two
strikeouts and two walks in five innings.
Franklin Pierce went ahead in the
first as Keith Renaud followed a leadoff walk from Pennell with his
fifth home run of the season to left. The Ravens added four more in
the second. Pennell drove in a run with a single before the second
scored when Keith Renaud reached on a fielder's choice. Kevin
Renaud followed with a two-run double down the rightfield line.
Kevin Renaud's RBI single provided
a run for Franklin Pierce in the fourth before Christman belted his
third homer of the season, a three-run shot, in the fifth. Southern
put a run across in the eighth as Izzo singled through the left
side and later scored on a throwing error when advancing to third
on a wild pitch.

Franklin Pierce rallied from a 2-0 deficit after three
innings to claim a 3-2 victory in ten innings in game two of the
doubleheader.
Kevin Renaud led off the tenth with
an infield single, was sacrificed to second by junior Matt
Anderson (Medford, Mass./Medford), and scored the deciding
run two batters later when SCSU shortstop Michael Diaz's throw was
off the mark with what should have been an inning-ending
out.
Vinny Pennell was 1-for-2 for the
Ravens with two walks, a stolen base and RBI, while Anderson
finished 1-3 with an RBI. Jake Christman hit 1-3 with a double and
run scored, while Renaud was 1-4 with two runs scored.
Senior reliever Clay
Jenkins (Easton, N.H./Profile) picked up the win (1-0),
yielding just a hit with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.
Ravens starter Mike Adams (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard
Park) allowed two earned runs on nine hits with two
strikeouts and three walks over the first 7.1 innings.
Junior lefthander Will Hill
(West Haven, Conn./Amity) started for Southern and allowed
two runs, just one earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and
three walks in eight innings. Senior Ben Starta (Franklin,
Mass./Franklin) took the loss in relief (0-2), yielding
the one unearned run on a hit and a walk with one strikeout over
the final 1.2 innings.
Michael Diaz hit 4-for-5 for SCSU
with a triple, stolen base and run scored. Junior Billy
Hite (Shelton, Conn./Notre Dame) was 1-2 with a run
scored, while sophomore Kevin Bowerman (West Haven,
Conn./West Have) chipped in an RBI.
Southern opened the scoring with
single runs in the second and third. Hite led off with a walk and
later scored when teammate Jim McLaughlin (Medway,
Mass./UConn-Avery Point) got in a run down between second
and third just long enough before being retired for the third out.
Diaz tripled with one out in the third and later scored on a
Bowerman ground out.
Franklin Pierce cut its deficit in
half in the fourth as Kevin Renaud reached and advanced to second
when SCSU rightfielder Sean Morgan (Maynard,
Mass./Maynard) dropped a fly ball in right. Anderson
followed with an RBI single to center. The Ravens knotted the score
in the seventh as Christman led off with a double down the right
field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by
Pennell.
