Ravens notch 9-0 victory in game one, hold off Golden Falcons

RINDGE, N.H. (April 1,
2007) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 10th in this
week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)
Division II poll and 21st in the Collegiate
Baseball magazine rankings, swept a non-conference
doubleheader from Felician College at Dr. Arthur & Martha
Pappas Field this afternoon. The Ravens posted a 9-0 victory in
game one, before holding off the Golden Falcons for a 10-6 victory
in the nightcap.
Junior Kevin Renaud
(Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) led the Franklin Pierce
offensive attack, hitting a combined 5-for-7 with three runs
scored, a triple, home run and seven RBI. Senior Kim Hart
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) was a combined 3-5 with a run
scored, homer and two RBI, while classmate Cory Shepherd
(Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) finished 3-6 with a run
scored, RBI and stolen base.
Senior Ray Rose
(Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) was a combined 2-for-5 at
the plate for Felician with a double, home run and two RBI.
Franklin Pierce 9, Felician

Franklin Pierce scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth
to open a commanding lead in the Ravens 9-0 victory in game
one.
Senior preseason All-American
Arric Mather (Danville, N.H./Winnacunnet) went the
distance for Franklin Pierce in the seven-inning contest for his
first shutout of the season, scattering five hits and a walk with
four strikeouts for his second win of the season (2-1).
Kevin Renaud was 2-for-3 with a run
scored and three RBI, while senior Vinny Pennell (Spencer,
Mass./David Prouty) finished 2-3 with two runs scored and
an RBI. Freshman Kevin Rivers (Bristol, Conn./Bristol
Eastern) delivered a double and three RBI, while junior
Keith Renaud drove in a pair.
Five different Felician hitters
notched hits, with Ray Rose going 1-for-2 with a double. Freshman
Danny Conti (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) took
the loss (0-2) for the Golden Falcons as he was hit for six runs,
just three earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks
over 5.2 innings.
Franklin Pierce opened the scoring
with three in the third. The Ravens led off with a pair of walks,
and after a Conti wild pitch, Pennell drove in the first run when
he reached on an infield single. Keith Renaud followed with an RBI
sac fly before twin brother Kevin Renaud delivered an RBI single.
Franklin Pierce broke the game open
with six unearned runs in the sixth after Conti should have been
out of the inning 1-2-3 as Ravens senior Jake Christman
(Newton, Mass./Newton North) extended the inning when he
reached on an error. The Ravens loaded the bases and the first run
scored when Keith Renaud reached with an infield single. Kevin
Renaud followed with a two-run single through the left side before
Rivers cleared the bases with a three-run double down the
rightfield line.

Franklin Pierce held off a pair of Felician rallies,
scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth to provide insurance for a
10-6 victory in game two.
Kevin Renaud again led the Franklin
Pierce effort, hitting 3-for-4 with a triple, home run, two runs
scored and four RBI. Kim Hart was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with a
stolen base, home run and two RBI, while Cory Shepherd finished 2-3
with an RBI. Keith Renaud chipped in by hitting 2-4 with a double
and two runs scored.
Junior Steve Shepard
(Peterborough, N.H./Conval) earned his third win of the
season (3-0), allowing six runs, four earned, on four hits and five
walks with three strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Classmate
Tyler Bishop (Milford, N.H./Milford) collected his
third save of the season, allowing a hit with three strikeouts over
the final 1.2 innings.
Sophomore Mike Libretta
(Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) led Felician as he
hit 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Ray Rose batted 1-3
with a home run and two RBI, while grad student Ryan
Iannelli (Clarksboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) finished 1-3
with a stolen base and run scored.
Freshman Greg Spatz
(Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) suffered the loss (0-2) as
he was hit for eight earned runs on 11 hits and one walk.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 4-0
lead with three runs in the first and another in the second. Vinny
Pennell and Keith Renaud opened the first with back-to-back doubles
and Kevin Renaud followed with a triple. Rivers drove in the latter
Renaud two batters later on a fielder's choice. Jake Christman drew
a leadoff walk in the second, stole second and advanced to third on
a Shepherd single before scoring on a ground out.
Felician rallied with four in the
top of the third to knot the score. Libretta notched a two-run
single, before Rose belted a two-run home run. Franklin Pierce
answered with four of its own in the home half. Hart smacked a
two-run homer to right, before Christman notched an RBI double and
Shepherd collected an RBI single.
Felician drew within two with
single runs in the fifth and sixth. Iannelli drew a leadoff walk
and later scored when freshman Richard Melendez (Miami,
Fla./South Miami) reached on an error on what should have
been an inning-ending ground out to third. Sophomore Mike
Buckelew (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central)
reached on an error in the sixth and later scored on a single
through the right side by Libretta.
Franklin Pierce scored twice in the
bottom of the sixth to add some insurance and Bishop retired the
side in the seventh to sew up the Ravens sixth-straight win. Keith
Renaud doubled with one out in the sixth before Kevin Renaud belted
his fifth homer of the season to left.
