Setters outscore Ravens 13-2 over middle periods to erase early
deficit

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (March
31, 2009) - Pace University outscored Franklin Pierce
University 13-2 over the second and third quarters to erase a first
period deficit and collect a 19-8 victory in Northeast-10
Conference men's lacrosse action at Pace Field this afternoon.
Senior Jake Sheppard
(Melbourne, Australia) and junior James Hammel
(North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) each collected five
points to lead Pace to the victory. Sheppard finished with three
goals and two assists, while Hammel netted a game-high four goals
to go with an assist. Senior T.J. Urban (Kinnelon,
N.J./Kinnelon) added two goals and an assist for three
points, while junior Joe Page (Eagan, Minn./Eagan)
dished three assists and added a goal for four points.
Senior Jason Flanigan
(Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and sophomore Jack
Scanlan (Great Neck, N.J./Great Neck North) each netted a
pair of goals for Franklin Pierce. Senior Ryan Boller (New
Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) added a goal and two assists for
three points, while junior Devon Dupuis (Lynn, Mass./Lynn
Classical) chipped in with two assists.
Senior Timothy Matheis
(Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) made nine saves over
45-minutes to earn the win in goal for Pace. Sophomore Shea
Campbell (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) made 11 stops
over the opening 37:39 in goal for Franklin Pierce. Classmate
D.A. Ivie (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity) also
stopped 11 shots, conceding just four, in 21:16 of action for the
Ravens.
Franklin Pierce held a 4-3 lead
after the first quarter as they answered an opening goal from
Sheppard 56-seconds into the match with four of the next five goals
in a ten minute span. Flanigan and freshman Matt Forzaglia
(Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Croton-Harmon) scored twice in a
two-minute span to put the Ravens in front (2-1) just under five
minutes into the match. After Pace knotted the score, Scanlan and
sophomore Jonathan Martinez (Waterbury Center, Vt./Rice
Memorial) gave Franklin Pierce a two-goal cushion (4-2)
with 2:11 left in the first quarter.
Sheppard pulled one back for the
Setters with just 48-seconds left in the frame and Pace scored the
first two goals of the second quarter (one each from Sheppard and
Urban) to regain the lead. Franklin Pierce tied the score (5-5)
with Boller's goal less than 30-seconds after Pace had regained the
lead, but the Setters wrapped ten goals around halftime to gain
control and open a 15-5 lead after a goal from freshman
Brian Goodwine (Robbinsville, N.J./Allentown) with
6:16 left in the third. Hammel scored all four of his goals during
that stretch.
Pace enjoyed a 59-25 advantage in
shots for the match, including 41-20 on target. The Setters posted
a 25-6 margin in face-offs and were successful on 3-of-13 man-up
situations, compared to 1-for-4 for Franklin Pierce.
Franklin Pierce (1-6, 1-3 NE-10) is
back in action on Monday, when it visits No. 2-ranked Le Moyne
College at 4 p.m. The Ravens return home on Tuesday, April 14, to
host Saint Michael's College at 4 p.m. Pace (3-4, 2-1 NE-10) hosts
Saint Michael's on Saturday at 1 p.m.
