Pennell drives in five as Ravens complete key three-game
series sweep
SMITHFIELD, R.I. (April 22,
2007) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 9th in this
week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)
Division II poll and 15th in the Collegiate
Baseball magazine Division II rankings, completed a key
three-game series sweep of Bryant University with a 7-1 victory at
the Bryant Baseball Complex this afternoon.
Senior Vinny Pennell
(Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) led the Franklin Pierce
offense as he hit 2-for-4 with a double, triple and five RBI.
Sophomore Alex Szymanski (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) earned the complete-game victory on the
mound (3-1), allowing just the one earned run on six hits with
eight strikeouts and two
walks.
Junior Kevin Renaud
(Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) was 2-5 for the Ravens
with and RBI, while sophomore Cliff Hicks (Merrimack,
N.H./Merrimack) finished 2-3 with two runs scored.
Senior Jake Christman (Newton, Mass./Newton
South) chipped in by going 1-3 with an RBI.
Junior Jason Alexander
(Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) was the lone Bryant batter with
multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 with a double. Freshman
Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor)
hit 1-3 with an RBI.
Freshman Brent Almeida
(Fairhaven, Conn./Fairhaven) suffered the loss (4-4) as he
was touched for four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts
and two walks over 6.2 innings.
Bryant opened the scoring with a
single run in the first. Freshman T.J. Magnell (Leominster,
Mass./Leominster) drew a one-out walk and later scored on
a single to center by Vigurs. Franklin Pierce answered right away
with a four-run second. Christman knotted the score with a
sacrifice fly, before Pennell delivered a bases-loaded triple down
the rightfield line.
The Ravens weren't able to break
the game open until scoring three in the ninth. Pennell started
things with a two-run double down the leftfield line, while Renaud
collected an RBI single.
Franklin Pierce (33-6, 18-2 NE-10)
is back in action tomorrow when it visits Southern New Hampshire
University at 3:30 p.m. The Ravens are home on Tuesday when they
host Stonehill College at 3:30 p.m. Bryant (23-16, 16-7 NE-10)
hosts Merrimack College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
