Ravens roll to 11-0 win in game one; snag 4-2 victory in
nightcap
YAPHANK, N.Y. (March 10,
2007) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 19th in this
week's Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll,
swept Queens College of New York in a non-conference baseball
doubleheader at Baseball Heaven this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce rolled to an 11-0
victory in game one behind a pair of home runs from junior
Matt Anderson (Medford, Mass./Medford) and six
shutout innings from sophomore Tom Cote (Swanzey,
N.H./Monadnock Regional). The Ravens completed the sweep
with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap behind four strong innings from
junior righthander Steve Shepard (Peterborough,
N.H./Conval).

Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 6-0
lead after two innings and never looked back in posting an 11-0
victory over Queens in game one.
Junior captain Matt Anderson led
Franklin Pierce's offensive charge, which collected 13 hits over
the seven inning game, by going 2-for-2 with two home runs (4), a
pair of sacrifice flies and four RBI. Junior Keith Renaud
(Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge), a transfer from Becker
College, was 2-3 with a homer (2) and three RBI, while senior
captain Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David
Prouty) hit 2-3 with a double and RBI. Senior Greg
Redding (Kerhonkson, N.Y./Rondout Valley) was also 2-3
with a homer (1), while classmate Jake Christman (Newton,
Mass./Newton South) finished 2-3 with a double.
Sophomore Tom Cote, a transfer from
Massachusetts, made his first start as a Raven and yielded just
three hits over his six shutout innings of work with nine
strikeouts and walking none to pick up his first win of the season
(1-0). Senior Clay Jenkins (Easton, N.H./Profile)
closed the game out with a scoreless seventh, striking out two.
Senior Robert Standish
(Valley Stream, N.Y./St. John's) suffered the loss (1-1)
as he was touched for ten earned runs on 12 hits with three
strikeouts and a walk over four-plus innings.
Franklin Pierce got a pair of runs
in the first as Anderson drove in Pennell (leadoff walk) with a
sacrifice fly and freshman Kevin Rivers (Bristol,
Conn./Bristol Eastern) added an RBI single. The Ravens
broke the game open with four in the second and never looked back.
Senior Cory Shepherd (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat),
a Becker transfer, singled and Pennell doubled before Renaud belted
a three-run homer. Anderson followed with a solo shot two batters
later.

Franklin Pierce came back from a
one-run deficit after three innings to post a 4-2 victory and
complete the doubleheader sweep in game
two.
Junior Steve Shepard earned his
first career victory (1-0) with four strong innings, yielding just
an earned run on one hit with six strikeouts and three walks.
Sophomore Mike Adams (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard
Park) picked up his second save of the season, closing out
the final three innings, allowing just an earned run on a hit with
five strikeouts and a walk.
Vinny Pennell paced the Ravens
offense as he hit 2-for-3 with a stolen base, RBI and run scored.
Matt Anderson hit 1-3 with an RBI and stolen base, while Kevin
Rivers was 1-3 with two stolen bases. Keith Renaud finished 1-3
with an RBI and run scored.
Senior Brian Honeyman
(Flushing, N.Y.), a transfer from Saint Francis College,
went the distance for the loss for Queens, yielding four earned
runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and no walks over the seven
innings.
Queens struck first with a leadoff
home run by senior Michael Hennessy (West Babylon, N.Y./St.
Francis Prep) in the third. Franklin Pierce answered right
away with two in the fourth as Renaud and Anderson both contributed
RBI singles. The Ravens added another run in the fifth as freshman
Drew Dwelly (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford)
singled and later scored on a sac fly from Pennell.
The Knights drew within a run in the
sixth with a leadoff homer off the bat of junior Andrew
Pfeffer (Briarwood, N.Y.). The Ravens added an insurance
run in the seventh when Jake Christman singled and later scored on
a suicide squeeze with Cory Shepherd.

back in action tomorrow with a key in-region doubleheader with
Dowling College, a fellow NCAA Northeast Regional participant last
year, here at Baseball Heaven beginning at noon. Queens (2-4, 0-0
ECC) hosts Felician College for a doubleheader next Sunday, March
18, for a doubleheader at noon.
