Ravens give Head Coach Jayson King 200th career victory
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 25,
2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 29 in Collegiate
Baseball magazine's Division II poll for the third-straight
week, took a 4-0 lead in the eighth before settling for a 5-2
victory at Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10
Conference baseball action at Penmen Field this afternoon.
The win marked the 200th
in nine seasons in the career of Franklin Pierce Head Coach
Jayson King. King has posted a 200-176-1
(.532) record overall, including a 179-129-1 (.581) mark in seven
seasons at the Ravens helm. The victory also gives the Ravens 20
wins for the fifth-straight
year.
Junior Mike Chambers
(Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) paced the Franklin
Pierce attack, as he was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Sophomore Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David
Prouty) registered two RBI without the benefit of a
hit, while junior Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey,
N.H./Monadnock Regional) was 1-4 with an RBI.
Senior Bryan Borowski
(Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) collected his fourth win of
the season (4-1) as he pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, yielding just
two hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Sophomore
Matt Fisher (Athol, Mass./Athol) posted
his third save of the season, matching his own single-season
program record, allowing a hit and two walks with two strikeouts
over an inning and two thirds.
Senior Chris Hart
(Waterville, Maine/Waterville) was 3-5 at the plate
for SNHU with a double and an RBI. Classmate Ray Powers
(Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) was 1-4 with an RBI, while
junior Wayne Parker (Manchester,
Conn./Manchester) finished 1-3.
Junior Joe Johnson
(Pelham, N.H./UMass Lowell) suffered the loss for the
Penmen (0-3), allowing three earned runs on four hits and four
walks with five strikeouts in 7.1
innings.
Johnson held Franklin Pierce
hitless until the fourth when Chambers broke the ice with a single.
Junior Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy
Name) reached with a bunt single to extend his
hitting streak to 13 games before Duplissie singled in Chambers for
the game's first run. Pennell drove in Hayes on a groundout.
The Ravens extended their lead to
4-0 with two more in the eighth. Chambers registered an RBI single
before the inning was extended with an error that loaded the bases
with two out. Penmen reliever Jon Morse (Arlington,
Mass./Arlington) issues a walk to Pennell to score
the second run of the frame.
SNHU cut the lead in half with a
pair in the home half of the eighth as Hart lashed an RBI double
and scored on Powers' single to left. Franklin Pierce added an
insurance run in the ninth when freshman Matt Anderson
(Medford, Mass./Medford) singled and later scored on
a Chambers sac fly to left. The Penmen got two runners on base with
one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Fisher got a game-ending
double play to escape the jam.
Franklin Pierce (20-9, 14-6 NE-10)
is back in action tomorrow night when it faces Stonehill College at
Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass., at 7 p.m. The Ravens return
to Dr. Pappas Field on Thursday to host Stonehill at 3:30 p.m.
Southern New Hampshire (9-20, 6-15 NE-10) hosts the College of
Saint Rose tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
