Borowski, Fournier pitch Ravens to key sweep, Olson nearly hits
for cycle in nightcap
RINDGE, N.H. (April 16,
2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 29 in this week's
Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll, swept a
Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader from Saint Anselm
College at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon. The
Ravens posted a 3-1 victory in game one before claiming a 5-1
decision in the nightcap.
Franklin Pierce has now won four in
a row, ten of 11 and 12 of 14 heading into tomorrow's series finale
in Manchester. Senior Bryan Borowski (Clarksburg,
Mass./Drury) and sophomore Daniel
Fournier (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) held Saint
Anselm to just one earned run over a combined 16.1 innings in
starting roles on the mound this afternoon. The pair limited the
top five hitters to a combined 2-for-36 on the afternoon.
In game one, Franklin Pierce scored
three times in the second inning and made it stand up, posting a
3-1 decision. Ravens pitching held the top half of the Hawks lineup
to a combined 1-for-19.
Senior right-hander Bryan Borowski
pitched eight strong innings to collect his third win of the season
(3-1), allowing just the one earned run on five hits with five
strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Matt Fisher (Athol,
Mass./Athol) pitched a perfect ninth to nail down his
second save of the season (fifth career).
Sophomore Kim Hart
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) sparked the offense as he hit
2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Junior Mike Chambers
(Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) was 2-3 with a double
and stolen base, while classmate Mike Feetham (Quincy,
Mass./North Quincy) was 1-3 with an RBI.
Freshman Adam Hussey
(Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep) led the Hawks
offense as he hit 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
Senior Josh Skowyra (Brimfield,
Mass./Tantasqua) was also 2-3 with a double and
scored their lone run.
Saint Anselm senior
Ryan Fecteau (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford)
took the loss (2-3), allowing the three earned runs on eight hits
and two walks with eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
After being held scoreless in the
first inning for the first time in five games and just the ninth
time in 22 games this season, Franklin Pierce broke through in the
second. Sophomore Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David
Prouty) led off with a single, then scored on a
double from Hart down the leftfield line. Hart advanced to third on
a balk, then scored on a single down the line in left by Feetham,
who later scored on a fielder's choice.
Saint Anselm got its lone run in
the fifth as Skowyra led off with a double and scored on Hussey's
second double of the afternoon. However, Hussey was thrown out
attempting a steal of third and Borowski got a ground out to retire
the side and he went on to retire the final nine batters he faced
from there.

In the nightcap, sophomore Daniel
Fournier struck out a career-best 13 batters for the
second-straight game as he surrendered just an unearned run on
three hits and three walks over 8.2 innings to improve to 3-0.
After having an 18-game hitting
streak halted in game one, sophomore Garrett Olson
(Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) fell just a single shy
of hitting for the cycle in game two. He was 3-for-4 with an RBI
and three runs scored. Junior Bryan Duplissie (East
Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock) was 2-4 with a double and
RBI. Mike Feetham finished 2-4 with a stolen base, while Vinny
Pennell was 1-4 with two steals and an RBI.
Sophomore Mike Craig
(Milford, Mass./Milford) was 1-3 for Saint Anselm a
stolen base and RBI. Junior Ryan Call (Hopkinton,
Mass./Hopkinton) was 1-3.
Freshman Andrew Long
(Peabody, Mass./St. John's Prep) suffered the loss
for the Hawks (1-1), yielding three runs, two earned, on eight hits
with a strikeout and no walks over five innings.
Franklin Pierce jumped on the board
with a single run in the bottom of the first as Olson led off with
a triple to right and scored on a passed ball with two out. The
Ravens added another in the third on Olson's fourth home run of the
year to left, and took a 3-0 lead in the fifth as Olson doubled
down the leftfield line and scored on Duplissie's double to dead
center.
Saint Anselm struck for an unearned
run in the seventh as Modoono reached on a fielder's choice and
scored on a Craig single after reaching second on a passed ball.
Franklin Pierce broke the game open
with a pair in the eighth as Pennell registered an RBI single and
scored on a delayed double steal with Feetham with two out.
