Williams holds Ravens bats at bay, Cummings solid in
defeat
RINDGE, N.H. (April 17,
2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 29 in this week's
Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll, came up
just short in a bid to complete a three-game weekend series sweep
as Saint Anselm College salvaged a 2-1 victory at Sullivan Park
this afternoon.
Saint Anselm sophomore right-hander
Ryan Williams (Lynnfield, Mass./St. John's
Prep) came out on top of a pitcher's dual with
Franklin Pierce junior right-hander Tyler Cummings
(South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills). Williams collected
his second win of the season (2-3) as he allowed an earned run on
six hits with six strikeouts and no walks over nine innings.
Cummings (3-3) surrendered two runs, just one earned, on five hits
with four strikeouts and a walk in a complete-game
effort.
Sophomore Mark Wysocki
(New Britain, Conn./New Britain) finished 2-for-3 at
the plate for the Hawks with an RBI, while freshman
Adam Hussey (Danvers, Mass./St. John's
Prep) was 1-3 with a run scored. Sophomore
Mike Craig (Milford, Mass./Milford) hit
1-3 with a stolen base.
Freshman Matt Anderson
(Medford, Mass./Medford) hit 2-for-3 for the Ravens,
while junior Mike Feetham (Quincy, Mass./North
Quincy) was 1-3. Junior Mike Chambers
(Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) had the lone
extra-base hit of the afternoon, belting his fourth home run of the
season in the ninth to finish 1-4.
Saint Anselm scored both of its
runs in the first. Senior Keith Beauregard (Leominster,
Mass./Leominster) led off with a walk, and then
scored when Hussey reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt
attempt. Hussey scored on an RBI single from Wysocki through the
left side before an out was
recorded.
Williams was perfect until Anderson
reached on an infield single with one out in the third. Sophomore
Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford
Hills) singled through the left side with two out,
but Anderson was unable to score and Williams got a fly ball to
escape unscathed.
Neither team had a hit from the
bottom of the fifth until the bottom of the seventh when Craig
singled, and the Ravens were held off the scoreboard until Chambers
led off the ninth with a blast to left center. Junior
Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey,
N.H./Monadnock) reached with an infield single, but
Williams got a strikeout and a game-ending double play to retire
the side.
Cummings did not yield more than
one hit in any frame after the Hawks got two singles in the first.
Franklin Pierce (16-8, 10-5 NE-10)
returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Pace University in a key
contest at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field at 3:30 p.m. Saint
Anselm (10-12, 6-7 NE-10) hosts the College of Saint Rose tomorrow
