#29 Franklin Pierce Edges Assumption, 6-5

Hayes' eighth inning RBI triple puts Ravens up for good, Duplissie belts eighth homer

RINDGE, N.H. (April 14, 2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 29 in this week's Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll, rallied from a 4-2 deficit and collected a 6-5 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.

Junior Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock Regional) led the Franklin Pierce offense as he hit 2-for-4, including his Conference-leading eighth home run of the season as the three-run blast put the Ravens up 5-4 in the sixth. Classmate Elliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) was 2-4 with a homer, stolen base and two RBI, while sophomore Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) was 2-4.

Sophomore Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) finished 1-2 with a walk and two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. He was also hit by his seventh pitch of the season, which was also the 22nd of his career, matching the program's career mark. Junior Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) was held hitless for the first time this season, ending his single-season record hitting streak at 19 games.

Sophomore reliever Matt Fisher (Athol, Mass./Athol) picked up his second win of the season (2-1) with 2.1 innings of shutout relief, allowing two hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Senior Chris Colabello (Milford, Mass./Milford) finished 3-for-4 at the plate for Assumption with a double and RBI. Freshman Brian Quaglieri (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's) was 1-4 with a home run and two runs scored, while sophomore Matt Butcaris (Beacon Falls, Conn./Seymour) was 2-2 after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh.

Junior Nick Andrade (East Providence, R.I./East Providence) suffered the loss, yielding just an unearned run and a hit in two innings of relief for the Greyhounds. Classmate Matt Anderson (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) started and allowed five earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk over the first seven.

Anderson settled down after yielding a pair of runs on three hits in the first and faced the minimum over the next four, retiring 11 of the 12 batters he faced in that span, before Olson led off the sixth with a single.

Franklin Pierce struck first with a pair of runs as Olson drew a leadoff walk, followed by Shea's third home run of the season to left. It marked the 12th time the Ravens have scored in the first inning (9-3 record in those games) and the fifth time over the last six games (three straight).

Assumption rallied for three in the second to take its first lead of the game. Quaglieri led off with his team's first home run of the season and the first homer by an opposing player at Dr. Pappas Field. Freshman Steve Zarembka (East Providence, R.I./East Providence) doubled and scored on Colabello's double with two down. Colabello advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a wild ball four to senior Brandon Brower (Middleboro, Mass./Coyle-Cassidy).

The Greyhounds loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batter in the fifth before junior Tyler Vivian (Ashland, Mass./Marian) scored on a wild pitch on a swinging strikeout.

Franklin Pierce's bats awoke in the sixth as Olson and Shea singled to set up Duplissie's three-run bomb to left with two out. The Greyhounds knotted the score in the seventh as Quaglieri reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a wild pitch.

Chambers reached on an error with two out in the eighth, before Hayes pushed him across with what would prove to be the winning run with a triple to left center.

Franklin Pierce (13-7, 7-4 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow when it hosts Granite State rivals Southern New Hampshire University at 3:30 p.m. Assumption (3-18, 2-9 NE-10) hosts Merrimack College at St. John's High School for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
