NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Franklin Pierce University women's volleyball team defeated Queens College in five sets before falling to Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at Pelz Gym.
With the split, the Ravens move to 2-4 overall.
GAME ONE: Franklin Pierce 3, Queens 2
Franklin Pierce opened the day with a 3-2 victory over Queens, winning by set scores of 16-25, 39-37, 25-21, 18-25 and 15-8.
After dropping the opening set, the Ravens responded in a marathon second set. Trailing 18-13, Franklin Pierce scored six straight points to take a 19-18 lead. Queens answered and moved back in front 22-19, but the Ravens rallied again with four consecutive points to take a 23-22 advantage. From there, the teams traded points until
Adrianna Reay broke a 37-37 tie with a kill before a Queens attack error secured the 39-37 victory. The set win tied the NCAA Division II record for the most points scored by a team in a set during the 25-point scoring era (76).
The Ravens carried the momentum into the third set, building a 15-8 advantage before holding off a late Queens push for a 25-21 win. Queens forced a deciding fifth set with a 25-18 victory in the fourth.
With the fifth set tied at 5-5, Franklin Pierce took control with a 6-0 run behind the serving of
Maddie Swanson. Swanson recorded a kill and an ace during the run, while
Grace Miller and
Adrianna Reay added kills to give the Ravens an 11-5 lead. Franklin Pierce closed out the match with four of the final six points to secure the victory.
Swanson led the Ravens with 19 kills, 15 digs and three service aces, while Reay finished with 16 kills and a team-high 20 digs.
Giuliana Pamatat recorded 37 assists, 16 digs and three block assists, while Miller led the front line with six block assists.
GAME TWO: SCSU 3, Franklin Pierce 0
In the second match, Franklin Pierce fell to Southern Connecticut State in three sets, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-16.
The Ravens remained within striking distance throughout the opening set, pulling within one at 22-21 following a Pamatat service ace. Southern Connecticut responded with the final three points to take the set.
Swanson led Franklin Pierce with eight kills while hitting .333 in the match. Pamatat recorded nine assists and six digs, while
Grace Miller finished with three service aces.
Franklin Pierce returns to action on Tuesday, September 8, for a road match against Assumption University beginning at 7 p.m. in Worcester, Massachusetts.
