Ravens Fall Just Short of the Owls in Overtime

HOW IT HAPPENED

The game started well for the Ravens as they opened the scoring. In the first quarter, freshman midfielder Sydalia Savage (Skowhegan, ME) scored her second goal of the season, unassisted. Savage recently scored her first collegiate goal against Saint Michael's on September 10. With a little over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, the Ravens held a 1-0 lead.

Halfway through the quarter, junior back Reese Swanson (Somerset, MA) received a pass from senior midfielder Lily Zavras (Worcester, MA) and scored her fourth goal of the season. She leads the Ravens in goals scored after securing a hat-trick against Saint Michael's on September 10.

The Ravens held a 2-0 lead going into the second half, but then the Owls struck back in the third quarter. Southern Connecticut State's Natalia Fiato got the Owls on the board from inside the circle to cut the Ravens' lead in half.

A few minutes later, Isabella Foster found Taylor Leckey, who scored to tie the game at two. The Ravens, who had the momentum, found it taken away with two goals in three minutes.

The game remained tied through the fourth quarter, forcing overtime. Twenty seconds into overtime, after the Owls controlled the faceoff, Foster again found Leckey in the circle, who shot a backhanded chip into the net. She secured her second goal of the game and a comeback, overtime winner.

It was a crushing defeat for a Ravens team that held their own, yet the differences in offensive opportunities ultimately decided the winner. The Ravens were outshot 23-8 (12-7 in shots on goal), with the largest margin being corners. The Owls had 19 corners compared to the Ravens' two, which ultimately was the difference in the game.

The Ravens will look to brush this loss off their shoulders and return to action against the Adelphi Panthers this weekend in their first conference game. Opening faceoff for that game will be Saturday, September 20, at Noon in Garden City, NY.
