HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first period ended scoreless but went back and forth. Both teams played the puck well, but it was the Ravens who generated more chances with a late power play. The Ravens outshot the Pioneers 13-6 in the period.

  • It was in the second period that the Ravens opened the scoring. The Ravens forced a turnover in the neutral zone that lead to a three-on-one rush. Sophomore defender Courtney Swenson (Bolingbrook, IL) shot the puck at Carly Greene who initially made the save, but Swenson gathered the rebound and poked it home to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead. The Ravens then scored again off a turnover last  in the period. Junior defender Maggie Korneta (Naperville, IL) lifted the puck over Greene's left pad after getting the rebound from first year forward Caleigh Murphy (Belle Harbor, NY) to put the Ravens up 2-0.

  • The Ravens would hold on to the 2-0 lead for the rest of the game. The Pioneers came out hot to start and end the third period, but Senior goaltender Gwen Bowler (Canterbury, NH) made stellar save after stellar save to complete the 36-save shutout.

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS

  • The Pioneers outshot the Ravens 36-33 with 19 of those shots coming in the third period.

  • Gwen Bowler completed her second shutout of the season, stopping all 36 of the Pioneers shots. Carly Greene also had a good performance for Sacred Heart, stopping 31 of 33 shots.

  • Both teams went 0-4 on the power play, which was especially detrimental to the Pioneers, who had many close chances with the extra skater.
