HOW IT HAPPENED
-
The first period ended scoreless, and the Ravens were on their heels, being outshot 15-6. Senior goaltender Jill Hertl (Highland Park, Ill.) made all 15 stops in the opening 20 minutes, setting the tone defensively for the rest of the game.
-
In the second period, the Eagles still had no answer for the senior goaltender, and the Ravens took advantage. That is when Valeri swooped halfway through the period and scored her first collegiate goal. With Bo Dean (Toronto, Ontario) and Brynn Levinson (Glencoe, Ill.) helping her on the play, Valeri kicked off her career as a Raven with a bang, giving them a 1-0 advantage after two periods.
-
Then Hertl continued to make more saves in the third period, totaling 30 saves in a shutout win, her first of the season. Dean sealed the win with an empty netter in the final two minutes of play to officially give the Ravens a 2-0 win.
The Ravens improved to 2-1 in conference play and beat the team that knocked them out of last season's playoffs in two games. They will play the Eagles for game two of their series tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in Shelton, Connecticut.
