Ravens Fall Short in Home Opener to Saint Anselm, 2-1

Recap by student-staff writer Colin Struckman

WINCHENDON, Mass. (11/8/24) – Despite a late push from the Ravens courtesy of a goal from Nick Fish, they couldn't get past the Saint Anselm Hawks, dropping the home opener 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Northeast-10 conference play.

Score: Saint Anselm 2, Franklin Pierce 1

Records: Franklin Pierce (0-3-0, 0-1-0 NE-10), Saint Anselm, (2-0-1, 1-0-0 NE-10)

Location: Jason Ritchie Ice Arena, Winchendon, M.A.

Date: Friday, November 8, 2024

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Despite the Hawks outshooting the Ravens 11-5 in the 1st period, the game remained scoreless after the first 20 minutes.

  • The Hawks broke the scoreless tie 2:08 into the 2nd period. Hunter Brackett cleaned up a loose rebound and just tucked it past Riley Mastowski (Jamestown, Pa.), putting the Hawks up 1-0.

  • Saint Anselm tacked onto their lead 5:10 after Brackett's goal. Max Burum slid home a rebound in front to give the Hawks the 2-0 lead. Mark Blaney and Hunter Brackett were each credited with the assist. They held onto their 2-0 lead heading into the 3rd period.

  • The Ravens wouldn't go away quietly in the 3rd period. Junior forward Austin Pick (Troutdale, Ore.) connected with sophomore forward Nick Tessier (Beaver Falls, Pa.) and dished a pass to sophomore forward Nick Fish (Ashland, Mass.), who lasered a shot from the right circle into the top right corner. Fish's goal made it a 2-1 lead for the Hawks and gave the Ravens signs of life. Unfortunately, they couldn't build off this momentum and fell just short to the Hawks in their home opener.

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS:

  • The Hawks outshot the Ravens 30-24.

  • Both teams were scoreless on the power play, with the Hawks going 0-4 and the Ravens going 0-3.

  • Sophomore Riley Mastowski suffered the loss in net for the Ravens, despite an incredible 28-save performance between the pipes.

NEXT UP FOR THE RAVENS: The Ravens complete the weekend series with the Hawks tomorrow night in Winchendon (11/9). Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
