Hannah Weagle scores team-leading sixth goal of the season for
the Ravens
RINDGE, N.H. (September 19, 2012) -- The Franklin Pierce
University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Stonehill
on Tuesday at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens moved to 3-2-1
overall and 2-2-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Skyhawks remained
unbeaten at 3-0-2 and 2-0-2 in league play.
Freshman forward Hannah
Weagle (Ipswich, Mass.) got Franklin Pierce on the board
in the 37th minute with a sweet header off a corner kick attempt
from junior Talita Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
Pereira, who earned an assist on the play, dropped a ball in over
the Stonehill defenders, which Weagle was able to put her head on
and send a shot to the upper left corner of the goal. The tally was
Weagle's team-leading sixth of the year.
That was the only mistake Stonehill
goalkeeper Amy Wheaton would make on the evening as she was
outstanding the rest of the way in making 10 saves to salvage a tie
and push her record to 3-0-2 on the year.
The Skyhawks knotted the score five
minutes later as Maddie Manning headed in her own goal, which came
off a free kick attempt by Melissa Laubi. Just like Weagle, Manning
was able to work her way behind several defenders to head in
Laubi's kick, which was sent not far from the midfield stripe.
Franklin Pierce outshot Stonehill,
21-4, but could not pull off the winning tally in the second half.
The Ravens, who produced 12 shots alone in the second 45 minutes,
had several chances including back-to-back opportunities inside the
box late in regulation, but Wheaton came up with a pair of huge
saves to send the contest into overtime.
Neither side generated many top
notch scoring chances in the two extra frames as the contest ended
in the draw. Senior goalkeeper Casey Edward (Marshfield,
Mass.) made one save for the Ravens as she moved her
record to 2-2-1 on the year.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
on Saturday when the Ravens play host to defending national
champion Saint Rose at 7 p.m. in Sodexo Field.
