RINDGE, N.H. (September 22, 2012)
– The Franklin Pierce University women's
soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 3 nationally ranked Saint
Rose on Saturday night at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens fell
to 3-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Golden
Knights improved to 6-0-1 and 4-0-1 in league play.
Carmelina Puopolo logged two goals
and a pair of assists for a six-point evening to spark the Saint
Rose offensive attack, while Sydney Bond chipped in with two goals
and one assist for five points.
Bond scored the match's first
goal in the 18th minute and Puopolo touched in
back-to-back markers in the 21st and 24th
minutes to put the match out of reach. Bond notched her second goal
in the 30th minute to stake the Golden Knights to a
comfortable 4-0 advantage.
Saint Rose tacked on another goal
in the 74th minute, this one coming from Meeghan Arno,
which was her first of the season.
Franklin Pierce tried to claw away
at the offensive end late in the match and was able to put a shot
past Saint Rose backup goalkeeper Lauren Minkoff in the
90th minute as graduate midfielder Aya Noguchi
(Tokyo, Japan) sent in a free kick towards the net, which
sophomore forward Caroline Savasta (Salem, Mass.)
was able to strike home for her third goal of the campaign. Noguchi
was credited with an assist on the play which was her second helper
of the season.
Jessica Gerski started in goal for
the Golden Knights and made a pair of saves to earn the win and run
her record to 5-0-1 on the year. Katie Weldon (Manchester,
N.H.) made her first career start in goal for the Ravens
and was saddled with the loss after yielding five goals despite
making four saves.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
on Wednesday when the Ravens travel to face Bentley at 3:30 p.m. in
Waltam, Mass.
