Hannah Weagle scores team-leading fifth goal of the season
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 15, 2012) – The Franklin
Pierce University women's soccer team couldn't overcome
two first-half goals by Southern Connecticut State in dropping a
tough 2-1 decision to the Owls in New Haven on Saturday. The Ravens
dipped to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast-10, while SCSU
improved to 3-1-1 and 1-1-1 in league play.
The Owls scored 1:50 into the game
off an own goal by the Ravens and tacked on the eventual winning
tally in the 40th minute as Jessica Spezzano notched an
unassisted breakaway goal.
Franklin Pierce owned a 12-2
advantage in shots for the match, but couldn't solve Southern
Connecticut keeper Elizabeth Nickerson until the 69th
minute when freshman forward Hannah Weagle (Ipswich,
Mass.) scored off a nice crossing pass from junior
Talita Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil). It was
Weagle's team-leading fifth goal of the season, while Pereira
picked up her first assist of the campaign to run her point total
to seven.
The Ravens continued to work hard
in the closing minutes to try and get the equalizer, but they could
not get it to go in. Nickerson made five saves in the contest to
earn the win for SCSU.
Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Casey
Edward (Marshfield, Mass.) made one stop, but took the loss to fall
to 2-2 on the year.
The Ravens return to action Tuesday
night when they play host to Stonehill at 7 p.m. in Sodexo
Field.
