RINDGE, N.H. (September 15, 2012) – Freshman back
Le-Shaun Young (Pickering, Ontario) scored off a
header in the 75th minute on Saturday night to lift the
No. 6 nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University men's
soccer team to a pulsating 1-0 win over No. 3 ranked Southern New
Hampshire at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens ran their record to
3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Penmen dipped to
4-1 and 1-1 in league play.
The goal was the first of
Young's collegiate career and it couldn't have come at
a better time as the Ravens had just finished killing off some
sustained offensive momentum by SNHU earlier in the second
half.
Southern New Hampshire held a 12-11
advantage in shots for the contest and registered most of those in
the early moments of the stanza. The Penmen, however, could not pop
in the go-ahead tally, thus allowing the Ravens to gain some
momentum themselves.
Franklin Pierce began to pick up
its offensive play midway through the half and entered deep into
SNHU territory, thus forcing the Penmen to foul in their box,
enabling the Ravens to set up for a free kick opportunity.
Junior forward Lukas Cramer
(Olsberg, Germany) set up the play with a boot from the
right corner of the box, which dropped in over several SNHU
defenders and onto the head of Young, who headed a strike to the
upper-left corner of the goal past the out-stretched arms of Penmen
keeper Dom DiMaggio. Cramer was awarded with an assist on the play,
marking his first point in a Ravens uniform.
Southern New Hampshire tried to
rally over the final minutes, but Franklin Pierce's backs
prevented it from any quality scoring chances, thus sealing the
Ravens sixth-consecutive win over the Penmen.
Graduate goalkeeper Jake
Wright (Los Angeles, Calif.) made three saves for the
Ravens to earn the win and run his record to 3-1 on the year with
two shutouts. DiMaggio took the loss (1 save) to fall to
4-1.
Both teams traded good scoring
chances in the opening minutes of the match, narrowly missing the
post each time. It appeared the Ravens had broken through midway
through the half as senior midfielder Amory Houghton (Cape
Elizabeth, Maine) headed in a goal, but the referees
determined there was a foul on the play before the ball had crossed
the goal line and waved off the tally.
SNHU started to pick up the pace of
play in the waning minutes of the period and carried that over into
the initial minutes of the second before watching the Ravens score
late to pull off another 1-0 win. Each of Franklin Pierce's
last three wins in the series has come by that score with the
Ravens notching second-half markers each time.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
Wednesday when the Ravens travel to Connecticut to face Bridgeport
at 3 p.m.
