PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (November
8, 2011) – Sophomore forward Roscoe Sweeney
(Falmouth, Mass.) netted his first goal of the season on
Tuesday night, but the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey
team dropped a 4-2 decision at Salve Regina in non-conference play
at Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink. Freshman forward Chad Goodwin tallied
a goal and an assist in the win for Salve Regina.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce
falls to 0-2-0 (0-0-0 Northeast-10), while Salve Regina improves to
1-1-0 (0-0-0 ECAC Northeast) with the victory.
The two teams traded goals in a
span of less than three minutes in the first period. On the power
play after the midway point of the stanza, Salve Regina opened the
scoring at the 12:29 mark on the first career goal for freshman
forward Michael Naso, off an assist from freshman defenseman Kevin
Kavanagh, who notched his first career point.
The Ravens countered just 2:58
later with an even-strength marker, the first Franklin Pierce goal
for junior forward Sean Dunn (Quincy,
Mass.). Freshman forward Tim Sullivan (Rye,
N.H.) picked up his first career point with an assist on
the play.
The Seahawks reclaimed the one-goal
lead when junior forward William Gomolinski struck for his first
goal of the season 3:27 into the second period. Sophomore forward
Isaiah Carlson and freshman defenseman Scott McMenimen picked up
the assists, with the latter notching his first career point.
From there, the game would remain
2-1 until early in the third period, when Salve Regina made it a
two-goal game just 1:51 into the final stanza. Goodwin notched his
first career goal, and the eventual game-winner, with an unassisted
tally. Franklin Pierce would answer quickly to cut the lead to 3-2,
when Sweeney found the back of the net just 1:27 after the Goodwin
goal. Freshman defenseman Tim Haroules (Westford,
Mass.) picked up his first career point with the lone
helper.
Salve Regina created the 4-2 final
and effectively put the game away with 1:16 to play in regulation,
on the first career goal for freshman forward John Scorcia off an
assist from Goodwin, who became the only multiple-point scorer of
the night.
Junior goaltender Pat Dunn
(Quincy, Mass.) made 34 saves, but suffered the loss
(0-1-0) in front of the net for Franklin Pierce. Junior Mike
McDonald faced a barrage of 40 shots from the Franklin Pierce
attack, but turned aside 38 of them to pick up the win (1-0-0)
between the pipes for Salve Regina.
Franklin Pierce posted a 40-38
advantage in shots on goal in the game and went 0-for-6 on the
power play. Salve Regina finished 1-for-4 with the
man-advantage.
The Ravens return to the ice on
