RINDGE, N.H. (September 14,
2010) – Freshman middle Katie Jackson
(Cherry Creek, Colo.) pounded out 13 kills and hit .455 to
lead all players in both categories on Tuesday night as the
Franklin Pierce University volleyball team posted a 3-1 victory
over Assumption in non-conference play at Franklin Pierce's
Fieldhouse. Senior libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison
Township, Mich.) picked up her 1,500th career dig in the
third set for the Ravens.
With the win, Franklin Pierce
improves to 4-1 (0-0 Northeast-10), while Assumption falls to 6-6
(0-1 Northeast-10). The Ravens dropped the first set, 25-22, but
then rattled off 25-16, 25-14 and 25-18 victories in the second
through fourth sets to take the match.
Kohout became just the second
player in Franklin Pierce history to reach the 1,500-dig plateau.
She finished the night with 1,504 digs and sits 190 digs shy of
tying Tara Vece for the program's all-time record. Vece collected
1,694 digs for the Ravens from 2002 through 2005.
Jackson added three aces, four digs
and three block assists to her 14 kills to lead the Ravens' efforts
on the night. Senior outside hitter Christina Calderon
(Tombstone, Ariz.) contributed 12 kills, three digs and
three block assists of her own, as the duo worked off the set of
senior Pam Walker (Chino Hills, Calif.), who
finished with 41 assists, one shy of her career high.
Freshman outside hitter
Lauren Miller (Alexandria, Ind.) saw success on
both sides of the ball for Franklin Pierce, as she collected nine
kills to go with nine digs as she narrowly missed a double-double.
She also contributed a block and two aces on the evening. One of
those aces came during a key stretch early in the third set. After
the Ravens knotted the match at 1-1 by taking the second set,
Miller took the ball and ran off the first seven points of the
third set on her serve.
From there, the Ravens took the
third set going away and headed for the fourth set looking to close
out the match. The fourth set remained close throughout, with the
Ravens clinging to a 20-18 lead before Jackson rattled off the
final five points on her serve, including an ace and a kill of her
own, to finish off the match.
Freshman outside hitter Lauren
Ostafin led Assumption with nine kills and a .231 hitting
percentage, while freshman outside hitter Mary Johnston added nine
kills of her own. Ostafin finished one kill shy of a double-double,
as she contributed 13 digs, while sophomore libero Steph Whooten
led the Greyhounds' defensive efforts with 16 digs. Freshman setter
Jess Reimers dished out 17 assists for Assumption.
The Ravens return to the court on
Saturday, Sept. 18, when they travel to Post for a pair of
non-conference matches. Franklin Pierce will face Molloy at 3 p.m.
and Post at 5 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
