RINDGE, N.H. (September 22,
2009) – Sophomore forward Danielle Dolan
(West Brookfield, Mass.) scored a goal and added an assist
on Tuesday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University field
hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Saint Michael's in
non-conference play at Sodexo Field. Sophomore forward Tia
Levins (Manchester, Maine) scored the game-winning goal
and added an assist for Franklin Pierce.
With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 4-5 (1-1 Northeast-10),
while Saint Michael's falls to 2-7 (0-1 Northeast-10) with
the loss. The win is the third in a row for Franklin Pierce, which
marks the program's first thee-game winning since it won four
in a row between Sept. 11 and Sept. 17, 2003.
Franklin Pierce opened the scoring with just under eight minutes
to play in the opening half. Levins crossed the ball into the
circle from the left side. It wound up right on the stick of Dolan,
who stuffed the ball into the empty cage for her third goal of the
season.
The Ravens extended to lead to 2-0 just eight seconds prior to the
halftime break. Franklin Pierce had numbers inside the circle and
capitalized on the advantage, as Dolan return the favor this time.
She slipped the ball to Levins at the left post and she knocked it
into the cage for her fourth goal in three games.
Franklin Pierce controlled play, especially late in the first half
and headed into the halftime break with a 7-4 shots advantage.
Saint Michael's was awarded the only penalty corner of the
opening stanza.
After much of the second half went scoreless, the Ravens added an
insurance marker with 6:32 to play in regulation to create the 3-1
final. Senior forward Ashley Abernethy (Bellingham,
Mass.) had the ball along the endline to the right of the
cage. She sent a cross toward the front of the goal which was
deflected into the cage by the Saint Michael's defense to
give Franklin Pierce a two-goal cushion.
The Ravens controlled play throughout the second half to the tune
of an 8-4 shots advantage and held a 15-8 edge over the course of
the game. Each team was awarded two penalty corners in the
contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro,
Mass.) made one save against two shots to earn the victory
(3-4) in front of the cage for Franklin Pierce. Junior Meghan
McLaughlin stopped seven of 10 shots on her cage and took the loss
(2-6) between the pipes for Saint Michael's.
The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 26, when they
travel to Bentley for a non-conference contest. Game time is set
for 1 p.m. in Waltham, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on
Sept. 30 against Assumption at 4 p.m.
