Nicole Henrique notched a goal and an assist on Saturday against Saint Anselm.

RINDGE, N.H. (Sept. 6, 2008) – Sophomore forward Nicole Henrique (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) scored the game-winning goal and later added an assist on Saturday to lead the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Merrimack in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Junior forward Ashley Abernethy (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) also tallied a goal and an assist in Franklin Pierce's first victory of the season.

Nearly the entire first half went scoreless before Franklin Pierce tallied the game's first goal with six seconds remaining in the frame. Abernethy corralled the ball on the right side and fed it into the middle. Henrique was all alone in front of the cage and able to deflect the pass into the goal to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead.

Play was fairly even in the first half, with Franklin Pierce holding a slim, 4-3 shots advantage.

The Ravens would double the lead to 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the second half. This time it was Henrique who set things up as she took a shot from the right side. Merrimack freshman goalkeeper Jillian Lewis (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) made the initial save, put Abernethy put the rebound home to tally her second goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce held a 7-4 advantage in shots in the second half, as well as an 11-7 edge over the full 70 minutes.

Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Tormollan (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) made four saves in front of the Franklin Pierce cage for her first career win and shutout. Lewis made four saves for Merrimack in defeat.

The Ravens (1-2, 1-1 NE-10) return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 10 when they travel to take on Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Manchester, N.H. Merrimack (1-2, 1-1 NE-10) returns to action on Sept. 10 at home against Saint Michael's.
