MANCHESTER, N.H. (Sept. 10, 2008)
– Sophomore forward Emily
Morrissey (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) scored the
game-winning goal 46 seconds into overtime on Wednesday afternoon
to lead the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team to a 2-1
victory over Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference play.
Franklin Pierce controlled play in the first half, as the Ravens
enjoyed a 6-3 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners.
However, nothing would come of it as the two teams went into
halftime scoreless.
After more than 25 more scoreless minutes to open the second half,
Franklin Pierce broke through with the game's first goal with
8:48 remaining. Sophomore midfielder Jordan Baillargeon (Westfield,
Mass./Westfield) controlled the ball along the end-line to
the right of the cage. She was able to slot a ball through to
sophomore forward Nicole Henrique (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) out
front who hammered it home for a 1-0 lead.
Saint Anselm would answer with the tying marker just 49 seconds
later. While the initial offensive foray by the Hawks was turned
away by Franklin Pierce freshman goalkeeper Kristin Tormollan (Waterville,
Maine/Waterville), Saint Anselm senior forward Laura Urko
(Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) was able to corral a rebound and send
a shot to the back of the cage to tie the game at 1-1. The game
would remain tied through the remainder of regulation.
Franklin Pierce held a 6-3 shots advantage and a 6-2 edge in
penalty corners in the second half.
Morrissey would give the Ravens back-to-back victories with her
first goal of the season just 46 seconds into the extra session. A
centering pass from the left side was deflected out into the high
slot. It fell right onto the stick of Morrissey who beat Saint
Anselm junior goalkeeper Riley Haddock (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth)
to notch the game-winner.
Franklin Pierce took the only shot of the extra session to finish
with a 13-6 advantage for the game. The Ravens also enjoyed an 11-3
edge in penalty corners.
Tormollan made two saves in front of the Franklin Pierce cage to
pick up the victory. Haddock made seven saves for Saint Anselm in
defeat.
The Ravens (2-2, 2-1 NE-10) return to the field on Saturday, Sept.
13 when they return home to host Assumption in a Northeast-10
Conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Sodexo Field in
Rindge, N.H. Saint Anselm (2-2, 2-2 NE-10) returns to action on
