FLORENCE, S.C. (September 19,
2008) – Senior Emily Schultz
(Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) racked up 19 kills on
Friday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University volleyball
team to a 3-2 victory over Fayetteville State in non-conference
action on the first day of the Swamp Fox Invitational. Later on
Friday, the Ravens dropped a 3-0 decision to host Francis
Marion.
In the first match of the day, Franklin Pierce dropped the first
set to Fayetteville State, 25-23, before rebounding to take the
second, 25-22. Fayetteville State then took a 2-1 lead with a 25-22
win in the third set. However, Franklin Pierce rallied to win the
match by taking the fourth and fifth sets, 25-15 and 15-10,
respectively.
Senior Emily Schultz (Salem,
Wis./Westosha Central) led the Ravens offensively in the
afternoon match with 19 kills and narrowly missed a double-double
with nine digs, while also chipping in a pair of block assists and
a service ace. Senior Nicole
Buchholz (Broadlands, Va./Stone Bridge) joined Schultz in
double figures with 17 kills and also keyed the defensive effort
with six solo blocks. Both Schultz and Buchholz worked primarily
off the set of senior Karissa
Hookstadt (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo), who racked
up 61 assists in the match to go with five digs and four aces.
On Friday night, Franklin Pierce was swept by Francis Marion,
25-19, 25-17, 25-21.
In the nightcap, Buchholz led the way for the Ravens with eight
kills. Sophomore Chelsie Kohout
(Harrison Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) paced the
Franklin Pierce defense with 11 digs while junior Katie Ristow (Miami, Fla./Miami
Killian) joined her in double digits with 10 digs.
The Ravens (4-8, 1-1 NE-10) return to the court tomorrow on the
second day of the Swamp Fox Invitational. Franklin Pierce will take
on Carson-Newman at 9 a.m. before squaring off with Augusta State
at 1 p.m.
