Ferreira scores twice to become the Ravens' all-time
goals leader

RINDGE, N.H. (April 13,
2008) - Freshman Dylan Schmitz (Newport,
R.I./Moses Brown) scored a season-high five goals to lead Bryant
University, ranked sixth in this week's United States
Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Div. II poll, past Franklin
Pierce University in a Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse match
on Sunday afternoon at Sodexho Field.
Schmitz was one of 14 Bulldogs to
find the net and one of 16 to record at least one point on the
afternoon. The freshman added one assist to finish with a game-high
six points. Junior Kevin Hoagland (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury)
and freshman Gary Crowley (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) each added
three goals and one assist apiece to pace the balanced Bulldog
attack.
Senior captain Luke
Ferreira (Farmington, Maine/Mount Blue) led the Ravens
with two goals on the day. With his second tally of the game and
70th of his career, Ferreira passed Bill Paradis to become the
leading goal-scorer in program history. The senior also ranks
second on the school's all-time points list with 89, behind only
Paradis' 103.
Junior Jason Flanigan
(Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and sophomore Lucas
Hamory (Canton, Mass./Canton) also netted one goal each
for Franklin Pierce.
Franklin Pierce held its own with
Bryant in the opening quarter, as Ferreira and Flanigan responded
to a pair of early goals with two of their own to knot the game at
two 4:31 into the first quarter. But Crowley came back with a pair
of tallies and Hoagland netted his second of the game with 2:19
left in the frame as the Bulldogs finished the first quarter with a
5-2 lead.
The second quarter was all Bryant,
as the visitors outscored the home team, 10-0, to take a 15-2 edge
into halftime. Nine different players scored for the Bulldogs in
the second frame, while Schmitz added two goals.
The action slowed considerably in
the final two quarters of play, as the Bulldogs pulled back
somewhat on the offensive end. Franklin Pierce held a slight 7-6
shot advantage in the third quarter, forcing the Bryant goaltenders
to make four saves, while Bryant regained its edge with a 14-7
advantage in the fourth quarter. Bryant outscored Franklin Pierce
in the second half, 7-2.
For the game, Bryant took 54 shots
to Franklin Pierce's 24, including a 37-16 advantage in shots on
goal.
Senior goaltender Michael Kennedy
(Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) made five saves on seven
shots in the first two quarters of play to earn the win for the
Bulldogs. Junior Ryan Hulse (Jackson, N.J./Jackson
Memorial) made his first start of the season in net for
Franklin Pierce, stopping 15-of-37 shots in 60 minutes of action.
Franklin Pierce (2-7, 1-4 NE-10)
returns to the road on Tuesday afternoon, when the Ravens face off
with national No. 8 Merrimack College at 1 p.m. Bryant (9-3, 6-1
NE-10) hosts conference opponent Assumption College on Tuesday at 7
p.m.
