Volleyball Drops Tight Match To Southern Connecticut State, 3-2

Emily Schultz Emily Schultz posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs on Saturday against Southern Connecticut State.

RINDGE, N.H. (October 4, 2008) – Seniors Karissa Hookstadt (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo) and Emily Schultz (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) both tallied double-doubles on Saturday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team was edged, 3-2, by Southern Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce's Fieldhouse. Freshman Leah Filonuk (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) and junior Jenna Tammel (Spring Valley, Minn./Kingsland) each notched double-doubles in the victory for SCSU.

Franklin Pierce took the opening set by a 25-15 margin, but SCSU would even things with a 25-21 win in the second set. After the Ravens took the third set, 25-22, the Owls again knotted the match with a 25-22 win of their own in the fourth. Franklin Pierce took a 10-8 lead in the decisive fifth set, but SCSU rattled off the final seven points behind the serve of Tammel to take a 15-10 victory in the fifth set and a 3-2 win in the match.

Senior Nicole Buchholz (Broadlands, Va./Stone Bridge) led four Ravens in double figures on the afternoon with 16 kills. She was joined in double digits by junior Katie Ristow (Miami, Fla./Miami Killian), sophomore Diana Rutt (Dayton, Nev./Dayton) and Schultz, who notched 15, 14 and 12 kills, respectively. The quartet worked off the set of Hookstadt, who piled up a match-best 52 assists. Defensively, sophomore Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) led the way with 22 digs while Schultz and Hookstadt added 12 and 10 digs, respectively, to complete their double-doubles.

SCSU featured a predominantly two-pronged attack, as Tammel posted 19 kills and Filonuk rang up 18 of her own. The duo added 16 and 17 digs, respectively to post double-doubles for the Owls. SCSU ran the offense through freshman Andrea Nolan (Ridgefield, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy), who dished out 47 assists. Five Owls reached double digits in digs while Tammel narrowly missed a triple-double by serving up eight aces on the afternoon.

The Ravens (8-13, 1-4 NE-10) return to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 7, when they host Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Fieldhouse in Rindge, N.H. SCSU (19-4, 4-1 NE-10) returns to action on Oct. 7 at American International.
