Ravens net two goals in two
minute span with less than 14-minutes to play
RINDGE, N.H. (September 12, 2007) – Franklin Pierce
University, ranked 17th in this week's National Soccer
Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II
poll, got a pair of late goals two minutes apart to defeat
Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer
action at Sodexho Field tonight.
Both Franklin Pierce goals came off the feet of freshmen as the
Ravens scored twice with less than 14-minutes to play to pull out
the victory. Shots were at a premium for both sides in the match
until the teams combined for eight of the 12 total shots between
them on the night in the final half hour. The Ravens finished with
a 10-2 advantage in shots overall (7-2 in the second half), with
both Assumption shots coming in the final eight minutes.
Freshman back Kelly Weygand (Bridgewater,
Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) netted her first collegiate
goal when she slotted in the match-winner with 13:14 to play in
regulation. Junior back Kristen Cilley (Belchertown,
Mass./Belchertown) served a long free kick from just
inside the halfway line on the right side, that was flicked to
Weygand by sophomore All-American Shona Franklin
(Leicester, England) inside the 18 for a shot into the
left side of the net from the top of the eight. Assumption senior
goalkeeper Lauren Matysiak (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) appeared to
stop the attempt, but was unable to prevent the ball from crossing
the goal line.
Freshman Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden)
netted an insurance goal just 1:59 later when she took a cross from
senior Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic),
beat a defender and fired in her team-leading sixth goal of the
season into the right side.
Matysiak finished with four saves for Assumption, while junior
Brittany Ester (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East)
made two saves to preserve her second shutout of the season for
Franklin Pierce.
Franklin Pierce (4-1-1, 2-1-1 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday
when it visits Saint Anselm College for a match at 2 p.m. The
Ravens return home next Wednesday, September 19, to host Stonehill
College at 4 p.m. Assumption (2-3-1, 1-2-0 NE-10) is back on the
pitch Saturday when it travels to American International College
