Demoner plays role in all
four markers with two goals, two assists Mello makes season-high
six stops to preserve third shutout of season
MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 15, 2007) – Franklin
Pierce University, ranked 17th in this week's National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II
coaches' poll rode four first-half goals to a 4-0 victory
over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference women's
soccer action at Melucci Field this afternoon.
Senior All-American Gabriela Demoner (Curitiba,
Brazil) played a role in all four Franklin Pierce goals,
scoring a pair and assisting on the other two, for a season-best
six points. Freshman Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg,
Sweden) added a goal and assist, while senior
Thatiane Preisler (Curitiba, Brazil) chipped in
with her first career goal.
Senior goalkeeper Jenna Mello (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) made a season-high six saves, stopping a
penalty kick and the ensuing rebound in the 81st minute, to
preserve her third shutout of the season (26th career). Freshman
Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) made one save in
goal for Saint Anselm over the first 65:31, while junior Micaela
Smith (Andover, Mass./Andover) collected two stops over the final
24:29.
All four Franklin Pierce goals came in the opening half of action,
with Demoner opening the scoring just 8:55 into the match.
Johansson back-heeled a cross from the right side by senior
Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) to
Demoner who was wide open in the center of the penalty area for a
low shot that trickled through the legs of Cooney. Demoner
completed her first half double in the 28th minute when she
converted a penalty kick after being taken down on the far side of
the 18.
Demoner and Preisler connected on a nice give and go for
Preisler's first goal of the season at 31:49. Johansson
rounded out the scoring when her sliding shot on the far post
knocked in a low cross from Demoner off a long pass from the back
by junior Kristen Cilley (Belchertown,
Mass./Belchertown) at 33:56.
Franklin Pierce finished with an 11-10 advantage on shots for the
match, with an 8-3 edge in the first half, while Saint Anselm
out-shot the Ravens 7-3 over the final 45-minutes. Saint Anselm was
awarded a penalty kick in the 81st minute, but sophomore Heidi
Reece (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) shot the attempt straight
into Mello. Reece gathered the rebound, but Mello made a nice save
to her left on the ensuing shot to preserve the clean sheet. Mello
made four of her six saves in the second half.
