Bulych, Bowler, Demoner and
Johansson all shine in season-opener
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (August 24, 2007) – Franklin
Pierce University, ranked No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II preseason
coaches' poll, opened its 2007 season with a commanding 6-0
victory over host Holy Family University on day one of the HFU
Classic this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce enjoyed a well balanced offensive attack as four
different players notched multiple points on the afternoon. Senior
All-American Gabriela Demoner (Curitiba, Brazil)
totaled five points with two goals and an assist as the Ravens
built on a 2-0 halftime lead. Sophomore Mackenzie Bulych
(Regina, Saskatchewan/Dr. Martin LeBoldus) played a role
in both first half goals for the Ravens, finishing with a goal and
assist. Senior Leanne Bowler (Clonalvy, Ireland)
and freshman Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg,
Sweden) also notched a goal and assist each.
Junior goalkeeper Brittany Ester (Toms River, N.J./Toms
River East), a transfer from Grossmont College, made seven
saves to post the shutout in her Franklin Pierce debut. Senior
Kelly McGrogan (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert's) was credited
with 14 saves in 79 minutes of action for Holy Family.
Bulych opened the scoring with a goal from the left side in the
19th minute, off a feed from Johansson. Bulych then set up Bowler
for a header in the center of the six in the 32nd minute.
Demoner took over in the second half, first setting up sophomore
Rachel Smith (Chichester, N.H./Bible Baptist School
(Pa.)) for a header to extend the Franklin Pierce lead to
3-0 in the 56th minute. Bowler set up a Johansson for her first
collegiate goal at 65:30, before Demoner netted the final two goals
of the match beginning with her first of the year off her own
rebound just 61-seconds after Johansson's marker. Demoner
rounded out the scoring with another unassisted strike in the 81st
minute.
Franklin Pierce (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NE-10) is back in action again
tomorrow for day two of the Holy Family Classic when it faces
Philadelphia University at 2 p.m. The Rams dropped a 1-0 decision
to the University of Massachusetts Lowell in today's second
match. Holy Family (0-1-0, 0-0-0 CACC) hosts UMass Lowell tomorrow
at noon.
