Johansson nets four of
Ravens five goals in opening 16 minutes to set the tone
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (August 25, 2007) – Franklin
Pierce University, ranked seventh in the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II preseason
coaches' poll scored five times in the opening 16 minutes of
the match and never looked back, cruising to a 9-0 victory over
Philadelphia University on day two of the Holy Family University
Classic at Tiger Field today.
Freshman Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden)
paced the Franklin Pierce attack, which took immediate control of
the match with five goals in the opening 16 minutes, four coming
off the boot of Johansson. Sophomore Rachel Smith
(Chichester, N.H./Bible Baptist School (Pa.)) netted the
other goal off a free kick in the tenth minute. Johansson's
goals came at 6:54, 7:55, 12:14 and 15:57. Senior Thatiane
Priesler (Curitiba, Brazil) assisted on Johansson's
first two goals.
Junior Kelly Johnson (Stamford, Conn./Stamford)
came off the bench to score two-straight goals around halftime as
the Ravens led 6-0 at the break before Johnson's second
marker extended the lead to 7-0 in the 59th minute. Sophomore
Mackenzie Bulych (Regina, Saskatchewan/Dr. Martin
LeBoldus) and senior Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield,
Mass./Taconic) rounded out the scoring for the Ravens.
Senior goalkeeper Jenna Mello (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) recorded four saves to preserve her
first shutout of the season (24th career). Freshman Kristen Mauro
(Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) made seven saves over the final
74-plus minutes of the match for Philadelphia after relieving
junior Sara Hall (Newark, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), who
made two saves, while surrendering five markers in the opening 16
minutes.
Franklin Pierce (2-0-0, 0-0-0 NE-10) is back in action next
Saturday, September 1, when it hosts 14th-ranked College of Saint
Rose in its home and Northeast-10 Conference opener at 1p.m.
Philadelphia (0-2-0, 0-0-0 CACC) hosts Caldwell College next
Saturday at noon.
