Golden Knights batter six pitchers to halt Ravens
record-matching win streak at 12
AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (April 13,
2007) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 8th in this
week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)
Division II poll and 13th in the Collegiate
Baseball magazine rankings, saw its second record-matching
12-game winning streak of the season come to an end with a 10-9
setback at the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference
baseball action at Shuttleworth Park this afternoon.
Sophomore Matt Frey
(Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) led Saint Rose as he hit
2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Freshman Derek Marshall
(Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) was 1-3 with a double, RBI
and two runs scored, while senior Carlos Gomez (Santo
Domingo, Dominican Republic) was 1-3 with three RBI.
Freshman lefthander Jake
Kozar (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) earned his second win
of the year (2-2), allowing six earned runs on six hits and four
walks with five strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Sophomore
Brendon Malkowski (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland)
picked up his first save of the season, closing out the final
inning and two thirds.
Junior Matt Anderson
(Medford, Mass./Medford) led Franklin Pierce as he hit
2-for-4 with a pair of home runs, four RBI and three runs scored.
Senior Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty)
was 3-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored, while freshman
Kevin Rivers (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern)
finished 1-3 with a stolen base and two
RBI.
Junior right-hander Steve
Shepard (Peterborough, N.H./Conval) suffered his first
loss of the season (3-1) on the mound, surrendering five earned
runs on three hits and two walks with a strikeout in an
inning-plus. Saint Rose struck five Raven relievers for five earned
runs on seven hits and five walks the rest of the way.
Saint Rose came out on top of a
seven-run first inning with a 4-3 lead. Rivers delivered a two run
single down the rightfield line for the Ravens with a third run
scoring on a wild pitch. The Golden Knights took a lead they would
not relinquish with four in the home half. Senior Ben
Paniccia (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohanasen) starting things
with an RBI single to left and Gomez later delivered a three-run
single with two out.
Saint Rose added a pair in the
fourth on a two-run double by Frey before Franklin Pierce closed
within a run (7-6) on a three-run homer to left by Anderson in the
fifth. The Golden Knights got a run back in the home half of the
fifth as senior Gary Miller (Prospect,
Conn./Wolcott) scored on a wild pitch.
Saint Rose notched two vital
insurance runs in the seventh. Marshall collected an RBI double,
while senior Mike Pagano (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown
South) added an RBI single.
Franklin Pierce's last comeback
effort came up just short, leaving a combined four runners on base
over their final two at bats. Senior Cory Shepherd
(Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) had an RBI single and another
run scored on a ground out in the eighth, before Anderson closed
out the scoring with his second homer of the game with one out in
the ninth. Rivers and senior Kim Hart (Gorham,
Maine/Gorham) followed Anderson's blast with back-to-back
walks, but Malkowski got a strikeout and ground out to escape the
jam.
Franklin Pierce (25-5, 10-1 NE-10)
opens a three-game series with Saint Anselm College with a
doubleheader tomorrow at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field
beginning at noon. The two teams with play all three games in
Rindge, with the conclusion coming Sunday at 10 a.m. Saint Rose
(7-17, 5-7 NE-10) hosts UMass Lowell for a doubleheader tomorrow at
10 a.m.
