Anderson drives in three, Kevin Renaud two as Ravens win
second-straight
RINDGE, N.H. (March 29,
2007) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 10th in this
week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)
Division II poll and 21st in the Collegiate
Baseball magazine poll, claimed its second-straight win with a
7-1 victory over the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10
Conference baseball action at Dr. Arthur & Martha Pappas Field
this afternoon.
Junior catcher Matt Anderson
(Medford, Mass./Medford) led the offensive charge for
Franklin Pierce, hitting 2-for-3 with three RBI, while classmate
Kevin Renaud (Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) was
2-3 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and two RBI. Senior
Cory Shepherd (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) was 2-4
with a pair of doubles and a run scored, while classmate
Jake Christman (Newton, Mass./Newton South)
finished 1-4 with a home run and two RBI. Junior Keith
Renaud (Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) extended his
team-leading hitting streak to 13 games, going 1-2 with a steal and
two runs scored.
Sophomore lefthander Jeff
Paulsen (Framingham, Mass./Framingham), a transfer from
Georgia Southern University, picked up his third win of the season
(3-0) as he allowed just the one earned run on three hits with six
strikeouts and four walks over five-plus innings of work. Sophomore
reliever Alex Szymanski (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) yielded just a walk with four strikeouts
in three innings of no-hit shutout
relief.
Senior Gary Miller
(Prospect, Conn./Wolcott) was 1-for-2 at the plate for
Saint Rose with two walks, a stolen base and run scored. Seniors
Ben Paniccia (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) and
Daniel Bruno (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga) and
sophomore Matt Frey (Clifton Park,
N.Y./Shenendehowa) were each 1-3 for the Golden Knights.
Junior Nick DeMidio (Scotia,
N.Y./CBA) took the loss for Saint Rose (0-3), allowing
seven earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and three walks
over 6.2 innings.
Neither team collected a hit until
Franklin Pierce strung three together with two outs in the third to
open the scoring with a pair of runs. Keith Renaud reached on an
infield single, stole second and then scored on twin brother Kevin
Renaud's single through the left side. Kevin Renaud stole second
and scored with a single to right by Anderson.
Saint Rose answered with a single
run in the fourth as Miller led off with a single through the left
side, stole second, and advanced to third on a ground out before
scoring with a Paulsen wild pitch. The Ravens got that run back
plus a second in the home half of the fourth when Christman
followed a single through the right side by freshman Kevin
Rivers (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) by pulling his
second home run of the season over the fence in right.
Kevin Renaud singled and later
scored on a sacrifice fly by Anderson for the Ravens run in the
fifth before opening things up with two more in the seventh.
Franklin Pierce (15-4, 2-0 NE-10) is
back in action on Saturday when it hosts NE-10 rivals Southern
Connecticut State University in a rematch of the last two NCAA
Division II Northeast Regional title games for a doubleheader
beginning at noon. Saint Rose (2-11, 0-1 NE-10) is slated to visit
Saint Anselm College on Saturday for a noon
doubleheader.
