Gossett goes the distance on the mound for Sailfish to hand
Ravens third-straight loss
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.
(March 22, 2007) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 10th
in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association
(NCBWA) Division II poll and 12th in the Collegiate
Baseball magazine poll, suffered its third-straight defeat
with a 7-5 setback to Palm Beach Atlantic University at Palm Beach
Gardens High School tonight.
Palm Beach Atlantic hands Franklin
Pierce's its first three-game losing streak since a three-game
skein during its spring break trip in March 2005. The Sailfish got
a complete game performance from senior Joel Gossett
(Coconut Creek, Fla.), a transfer from Florida Atlantic
University, for his third win of the season (3-3). He allowed the
five earned runs, while scattering ten hits with six strikeouts and
two walks.
Five PBA batters notched multiple
hits, led by a 3-for-3 performance from freshman Kevin
Koehn (North Palm Beach, Fla./Dwyer), who had a stolen
base, two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Zach Grau
(Kalamazoo, Mich./Kellogg CC) was 3-5 with a double, RBI
and run scored, while senior Raybo Lisle (Palm City,
Fla./Martin County) hit 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Senior Chip Davis (Palm Bay, Fla./Brevard CC)
finished 2-4 with two RBI and junior Chris Wellmaker (Vero
Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) chipped in a pair of hits and a
steal.
Senior Andrew McNulty
(Norwood, Mass./Norwood), a transfer from Seton Hall
University, suffered his first loss of the season (3-1) on the
mound for Franklin Pierce as he was hit for four runs, three
earned, on eight hits with no strikeouts or walks over 3.1 innings.
Junior Keith Renaud
(Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge), a transfer from Becker
College, led the Ravens offense as he hit 2-for-5 with a home run
and two RBI. Freshman Kevin Rivers (Bristol, Conn./Bristol
Eastern) was 2-3 with a double and run scored, while
senior Jake Christman (Newton, Mass./Newton South)
hit 2-4 with an
RBI.
Franklin Pierce got on the board
first with a single run in the top of the first as senior
Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) led
off with a triple and later scored on a single to left from junior
Kevin Renaud (Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) with
one out. Palm Beach Atlantic answered with two in the home half to
gain a lead it would not relinquish. The Sailfish got a lead off
single from Grau, and McNulty hit the next two batters, before the
tying run scored when freshman Tony Livelsberger (Hanover,
Pa./Hagerstown CC) reached on an error. The go-ahead run
scored two batters later on a ground out.
PBA added single runs in the third
and fourth before Franklin Pierce plated a pair of runs in the
fifth to close within 4-3 on Keith Renaud's two-run homer. The
Sailfish responded with three in the bottom of the frame to open a
7-3 lead. After the first two PBA batters reached, Ravens reliever
Arric Mather (Danville, N.H./Winnacunnet) got the
next two batters out before Koehn delivered an RBI single and Lisle
added a two-run safety.
Franklin Pierce had two runners on
the sixth, but came away with just one run on an RBI single from
Christman, and added another in the eighth, but got no closer.
