Ravens sweep Mercy with 15-1 victory in game one and 10-2
triumph in nightcap
BOCA RATON, Fla. (March 18,
2007) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 17th in this
week's Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll and
first in the Northeast Region, extended its winning streak to 11
games with an in-region doubleheader sweep of Mercy College at the
McCusker Sports Complex on the campus of Lynn University this
afternoon.
Franklin Pierce rolled to victories
of 15-1 and 10-2 in the twinbill. Senior Vinny Pennell
(Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) hit for the cycle in game
one, while junior Kevin Renaud (Southbridge,
Mass./Southbridge) was a combined 5-for-8 with two
doubles, a home run, three runs scored and two RBI in the
doubleheader. Freshman Kevin Rivers (Bristol, Conn./Bristol
Eastern) was a combined 4-6 with a double, two triples,
three runs scored and three RBI.
Junior catcher Matt
Anderson (Medford, Mass./Medford) also made history for
the Ravens, extending his school-record streak to 101-consecutive
games started behind the plate, including No. 100 in game one of
the twinbill.

Senior centerfielder Vinny Pennell hit for the cycle to
lead Franklin Pierce to a commanding 15-1 victory in game one.
Pennell was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and six RBI to go with
the double, triple and home run
(1).
Twin brothers Keith and
Kevin Renaud (Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge), junior
transfers from Becker College, both hit 2-for-3. Keith had a
triple, two runs scored and two RBI, while Kevin added a pair of
walks, a run scored and RBI. Kevin Rivers was 2-2 with a pair of
triples, two runs scored and an RBI, while senior Kim Hart
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) was a perfect 3-3 with a home run
(2), two runs scored, three RBI and a stolen base.
Sophomore Jeff Paulsen
(Framingham, Mass./Framingham), a transfer from Georgia
Southern University, earned the win (2-0) on the mound, allowing
just an earned run on one hit with nine strikeouts and two walks
over five innings for the Ravens.
Franklin Pierce took control of the
game with five runs in the second. Rivers got things going with a
triple, followed by an RBI singles from Hart and senior
Cory Shepherd (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) before
Pennell delivered a bases-loaded triple. The Ravens plated two more
in the third on an RBI triple by Rivers, who scored on a Hart
single.
After Mercy scored its lone run in
the fourth, Franklin Pierce added two more in the home half.
Pennell belted his first homer of the season before Keith Renaud
reached on a walk and later scored on a wild pitch. The Ravens
broke the game open with five in the fifth. Hart sparked the inning
with a homer before Pennell delivered an RBI double and Kevin
Renaud notched an RBI triple.

Franklin Pierce completed the sweep with a 10-2 victory
in game two. Senior preseason All-American Arric Mather
(Danville, N.H./Winnacunnet) picked up his first win of
the season (1-1) with a strong outing. He allowed two runs, just
one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk over 5.1
innings.
Kevin Renaud was 3-for-5 at the
plate for Franklin Pierce with a home run, two doubles, two runs
scored and an RBI. Matt Anderson was 2-4 with two runs scored and
two RBI, while Kevin Rivers was 2-4 with a double, two runs scored
and two RBI. Kim Hart finished 1-1 with two walks, a homer and two
RBI.
Franklin Pierce jumped on the
scoreboard with three in the top of the first. Anderson sparked the
inning with an RBI double, while Rivers notched an RBI double and
senior Jake Christman (Newton, Mass./Newton South)
added an RBI single. Mercy answered with two in the home half as
freshman Vincent Tesoriero (Glen Head, N.Y./North
Shore) singled, stole second, and then scored on a single
by senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham). Ross
later scored on a Ravens error.
Kevin Renaud's second home run of
the year put the Ravens up 4-2 in the second before adding two more
in the third and fourth frames. Hart's two-run homer came in the
third inning, before Anderson had an RBI single and later scored on
a ground out in the fourth. Franklin Pierce rounded out the scoring
with two more runs in the sixth.
