Giardina nets 77th-minute winner,
Mello posts fifth shutout
RINDGE, N.H. (September 30,
2006) - Franklin Pierce, among teams receiving votes in
this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, got a late goal in posting a 1-0
victory over Southern New Hampshire University, ranked fifth in the
New England region, in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer
action at Sodexho Field tonight.
Junior midfielder Jenna
Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) entered the match as
a reserve in the 58th minute and scored the lone goal to
lift Franklin Pierce to its seventh-straight victory. Giardina took
a cross from junior Thatiane Preisler (Curitiba,
Brazil), took two touches and then slotted a shot into the
right side of the goal in the 77th minute for her third
marker of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Jenna
Mello (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) made two saves (both
second half) to preserve the victory and her fifth shutout of the
season (20th career). Mello and the Ravens are now
unscored upon over their last three matches, which a scoreless
streak of 333:05.
Sophomore Stef Young
(Natick, Mass./Marian) made three saves for Southern New
Hampshire, who were out-shot 13-8 for the match.
Franklin Pierce (8-2, 7-2 NE-10)
returns to action on Wednesday when it visits Le Moyne College at 4
p.m. The Ravens do not return home until Saturday, October 14, when
they host UMass Lowell at 2 p.m. Southern N.H. (3-4-4, 2-4-3 NE-10)
hosts Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
