Mather fires one-hit shutout, fans
ten, to lead Ravens
MANCHESTER, N.H. (May 1,
2006) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 12th in this
week's Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II coaches
poll, posted a 3-0 victory over Southern New Hampshire University
in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Penmen Field this
afternoon.
Junior right-hander
Arric Mather (Danville, N.H./Winnacunnet)
tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out ten and walking just one to
collect his eighth win of the season (8-1). Mather yielded a
one-out single in the bottom of the first, and then held Southern
New Hampshire hitless the rest of the way, allowing just two base
runners the rest of the way.
Sophomore Matt Anderson
(Medford, Mass./Medford) sparked the offense as he
hit 2-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Mike Chambers
(Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) was 2-5 with a run
scored, while freshman Scott Savastano (Plymouth,
Mass./Plymouth North) finished 2-4 with a stolen
base.
Junior Rob Hennessey
(Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) suffered his first
loss of the spring (4-1), allowing two earned runs on nine hits and
three walks with five strikeouts over 7.1 innings of work. He
allowed just one hit over the first four
innings.
Senior Tony Aucoin
(Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) had SNHU's lone hit
of the afternoon, finishing 1-for-4.
The game was scoreless until
Franklin Pierce broke the deadlock in the fifth. Junior
Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David
Prouty) drew a one-out walk, stole second and then
scored on a double down the leftfield line by junior
Kim Hart (Gorham, Maine/Gorham).
The Ravens added an insurance run
in the eighth as Chambers led off with a single, was sacrificed to
second and reached third on a wild pitch before coming home on a
single through the left side by senior All-American
Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock
Regional) with one out. Franklin Pierce rounded out
the scoring in the ninth as Anderson led off with a single and
later scored on a wild pitch with one out.
Franklin Pierce (39-9, 24-5 NE-10)
is back in action tomorrow when it resumes its originally forfeited
contest at the College of Saint Rose from Friday. The Golden
Knights led 5-2 in the top of the second when the game was called
after the umpires ruled Ravens ejected head coach
Jayson King and their starting catcher
did not left the field in a timely fashion. Franklin Pierce
appealed the ruling and the game decision was overturned. The game
will be resumed where it left off on Friday.
Southern New Hampshire (19-21,
10-18 NE-10) visits Bentley College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
