#13/16 Franklin Pierce Downs Assumption

Ravens blank Greyhounds 6-0 in game one;
Post 7-2 victory in nightcap

WORCESTER, MASS. (April 29, 2006) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 13th in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll and 16th in Collegiate Baseball magazine's Division II coaches poll, posted a two-game sweep over Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference Doubleheader this afternoon at Assumption College. The Ravens blanked the Greyhounds 6-0 in game one before posting a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.

FRANKLIN PIERCE 6, ASSUMPTION 0  

In game one, Franklin Pierce freshman Scott Savastano (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) and junior All-American Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) paced the Ravens as each registered a multi-hit game. Savastano finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while Olson was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Senior captain Randy Fenton (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) chipped in with a base hit, one run scored and one RBI.

Junior Eric Grabowski (Worcester, Mass./David Prouty/St. John's) earned his first victory of the season (1-1), allowing no runs, on six hits while striking out four batters in 5.1 innings of work. Senior Mike Farrell (Russell, Mass./Gateway) tossed 3.2 scoreless inning of relief, allowing only three hits and striking out two.

Assumption received solid offensive production from senior Mike Cavalarro (West Haven, Conn./West Haven), classmate Tyler Vivian (Ashland, Mass./Marian) and freshman Chris DeSimone (Johnston, R.I./Hendricken). The three were a combined 6-for-12, each posting two hits apiece.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Olson started the rally with a one-out double. Senior All-American Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock Regional) followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate the first Raven run of the game. The Ravens would take advantage of two Greyhound errors later in the inning to score two more runs and take an early 3-0 lead.

Franklin Pierce added three more runs over the course of the seventh and eighth inning to secure its 36th victory of the season. Assumption starter, freshman Jeff Barbale (Charlton, Mass./Marian) suffered the loss (2-6), tossing seven innings, allowing four runs, one earned on seven hits, while striking out two.

FRANKLIN PIERCE 7, ASSUMPTION 2

In game two, Duplisse led Franklin Pierce as he hit 4-for-5 with two doubles, one run scored and four RBIs. Olson was also solid at the plate, totaling two hits, one run scored and one RBI, while junior Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) registered a 2-for-4 performance with one RBI.

Sophomore Tyler Vivian (Ashland, Mass./Marian) collected two hits and one RBI to lead Assumption in game two. Cavallaro notched an RBI single and scored a run to aid the Greyhound offense, while sophomore Scott Boyle (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) chipped in with one hit and one run scored.

Franklin Pierce junior right-hander Nate Berberian (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin) tossed 5.2 innings for the Ravens to earn his second win of the season (2-2). Berberian yielded two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out four and walking two.

Freshman Mike Gibbon (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester) hurled seven innings in a losing effort for Assumption (1-4). He allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Franklin Pierce struck first with a single run in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) singled through the left side to leadoff the inning and later stole second to move into scoring position. Two batters later, Duplisse connected for his first double of the game to drive in Chambers, giving the Ravens the early lead.

Franklin Pierce connected for four more runs in the top of the fifth inning as sophomore Matt Anderson (Medford, Mass./Medford) belted a one out double and later scored on an RBI single by senior Elliot Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant). Two batters later, Duplisse capped off the inning with his second double of the game, driving in two more runs.
