Duplissie homer the difference as
Ravens see shutout streak halted, but win sixth-straight
RINDGE, N.H. (April 27,
2006) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 13th in this
week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)
poll and 16th in Collegiate Baseball magazine's
Division II coaches poll, saw its record shutout streak come to an
end, but collected its sixth straight win with a 3-2 victory over
Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at
Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce, winners of 13 of
its last 14 and 18 of 20, had its shutout streak halted after
four-straight games. Saint Anselm scored a single run in the second
inning to end the Ravens pitching staffs shutout inning streak at
40.
Senior All-American
Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock
Regional) led Franklin Pierce as he hit 2-for-4,
including a go-ahead solo home run in the sixth that put the Ravens
up for good. Freshman Scott Savastano (Plymouth,
Mass./Plymouth North) was 1-for-2 with a stolen base
and RBI, while senior Elliot Shea (Jaffrey,
N.H./Conant) finished 1-4 with a triple and RBI.
Senior Randy Fenton (Worcester,
Mass./Doherty) also tripled in three at bats and
scored a run.
Senior Tyler Cummings
(South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) earned his seventh
win of the season (7-1), allowing two runs, just one earned, on
five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in the complete game
effort.
Junior right-hander
Ryan Williams (Lynnfield, Mass./St. John's
Prep) went the distance on the mound in a losing
effort for Saint Anselm (5-2). He allowed three earned runs on
seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Senior Anthony Modoono
(Lexington, Mass./Lexington) paced the offense as he
hit 1-for-4 with an RBI, stolen base and run scored. Junior
Wayne MacKay (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) was
1-3 with a run scored.
Saint Anselm struck first with a
single run in the first, ending Franklin Pierce's shutout inning
streak at 40. Modoono led off with a single and advanced to third
on an error on the next play before scoring on a ground out to
second by junior Chris Greeke (Hamilton,
Mass./Hamilton-Wenham).
Franklin Pierce knotted the score
in the fourth as senior Mike Chambers (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) led off with a single and later
scored on a two-out single through the left side by Savastano after
stealing second. The Ravens took a lead in the fifth on
back-to-back two-out triples from Fenton and Shea.
The Hawks evened things in the
sixth when MacKay led off with a single and later scored when
Modoono reached on a fielder's choice. The Ravens regained the lead
for good in the home half when Duplissie belted his team-leading
tenth homer of the season to right with one out. Cummings protected
the lead by retiring the Hawks in order in the seventh, eighth and
ninth.
Franklin Pierce (35-9, 20-5 NE-10)
is back in action tomorrow when it travels to upstate New York to
face the College of Saint Rose in a rescheduled game at 3:30 p.m.
Saint Anselm (19-22, 11-11 NE-10) hosts Pace University tomorrow at
3:30 p.m.
