Duplissie drives in four, belts Conference-leading seventh
homer, to lead Ravens
WALTHAM, Mass. (April 5,
2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked second in this week's
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division
II Northeast Region poll, used a ten-run fifth inning to power past
Bentley College, 16-10, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action
at DeFelice Field this afternoon.
After Bentley erased an early 3-0
deficit with six runs in the fourth, Franklin Pierce roared back
with ten in the fifth in collecting its fourth win over its last
five games. Ravens pitching continues to be hampered by walks as
four pitchers yielded nine passes and a hit batter, but three
Falcon pitchers walked eight and hit two on the day. Franklin
Pierce out-hit Bentley, 17-9, including seven extra-base hits.
Junior Bryan Duplissie
(East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock Regional) moved into
tenth place on Franklin Pierce's single-season home run list as he
belted his Conference-best seventh home run in just 14 games and
finished 2-for-5 with four
RBI.
Junior Elliott Shea
(Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) was 4-5 with a home run and
three runs scored. Freshman Matt Anderson (Medford,
Mass./Medford) hit 2-4 with three RBI, while junior
Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name)
was 2-6 with a triple, double and three RBI. Junior
Mike Chambers (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) was 2-5 with a pair of doubles to
extend his current hitting streak to 14 games, while sophomore
Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Norway)
extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the fifth.
Redshirt freshman Kyle
Graham (Westboro, Mass./Westboro) earned his first
collegiate win in relief. He allowed three earned runs on four hits
with two strikeouts and a walk.
Junior Chad Mastin
(Newmarket, N.H./Newmarket) paced Bentley as he hit
2-4 with two RBI. Classmate Bob Savoy (Norwell,
Mass./Norwell) was 1-2 off the bench with a double
and two RBI, while sophomore Steve Gath (Reading,
Mass./Reading) finished 2-4 with two runs scored.
Junior Jake Perkins
(East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) took the
loss for the Falcons, yielding nine runs, six earned, on ten hits
with a walk and a strikeout in 4.1
innings.
A two-run single from Mastin
sparked the Falcons six-run outburst in the fourth. Two errors, a
wild pitch, a double-steal and a passed ball resulted in the final
four runs of the inning.
Franklin Pierce responded by
plating ten in the fifth. Shea led off the frame with his second
homer of the season and after a Chambers double and an error,
Duplissie blasted a three-run homer to left to give the Ravens the
lead back (7-6). Olson added an RBI single before Hayes cleared the
bases with a bases-loaded triple, then scored when the relay throw
was mishandled by the Bentley shortstop.
The Ravens broke the game open with
three in the seventh. Hayes led off the inning with a double and
scored on a single from sophomore Kim Hart (Gorham,
Maine/Gorham). After sophomore Vinny
Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) scored on a
wild pitch, Anderson laced an RBI single.
Bentley scored three of its own in
the home-half of the seventh and a single run in the eight, but
could get no closer.
Franklin Pierce (8-6, 2-3 NE-10)
and Bentley (5-11, 3-4 NE-10) will battle again on Thursday in the
inaugural game on the Ravens Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field at
3:30 p.m. The Falcons have a non-conference game at Tufts
University tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
