Ravens open Dr. Pappas Field with power surge, belting
four home runs, two by Olson
RINDGE, N.H. (April 7,
2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked second in this week's
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division
II Northeast Region poll, belted four home runs in posting an 8-3
victory over Bentley College in Northeast-10 Conference baseball
action in the inaugural game at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field
this afternoon.
Sophomore third baseman
Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford
Hills) led Franklin Pierce to a season-best third
straight win (five of six overall) as he finished 3-for-4 with a
pair of home runs, a double and four RBI. He belted the first home
run in Dr. Pappas Field history with a solo shot to lead off the
bottom of the first and in process extended his current hitting
streak to 12 games.
Freshman Steve Carr
(Nahant, Mass./St. Mary's) hit 2-3 with a home run
and two RBI, while junior Mike Chambers (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) finished 2-4 with a homer and two
RBI. Chambers has now hit safely in all 15 of Franklin Pierce's
games this season after blasting a two-run homer to left in the
third.
Junior Tyler Cummings
(South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) picked up his
team-leading third win (3-1) of the season (14th
career), limiting Bentley to just an unearned run on five hits with
four strikeouts and no walks in eight strong innings. After
surrendering the unearned run in the fourth, he settled down and
retired eight straight and 13 of the final 14 batters he faced.
Senior Tim Bryant
(Reading, Mass./Reading) was 3-4 at the plate for
Bentley with a double, while sophomore Steve Gath
(Reading, Mass./Reading) hit 2-4 with two runs
scored. Junior GJ Vicente (Salem, N.H./Central
Catholic) led the game off with a single through the
left side to record the first hit in Dr. Pappas Field history.
Freshman Chris Dupay
(Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) suffered the
loss (2-2) as he was hit for eight earned runs on ten hits with a
strikeout and a walk in six innings.
Olson put Franklin Pierce on the
board when he led off the bottom of the first with a towering home
run to left center. Olson also sparked the Ravens three-run third
when he followed a Carr infield single with an RBI double to left
center. The Falcons retired the next batter, but Chambers smacked a
two-run bomb off the top of the Bentley bus beyond the left field
fence.
Bentley got a run back in the
fourth when Gath singled and later scored on an error that would
have ended the frame. However, Carr smacked a two-out two run homer
to right center to answer for the Ravens in the home half. Olson
put Franklin Pierce up 8-1 with his second blast of the day, a
two-run shot to center, after sophomore Kim Hart
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) reached with a single.
Bentley rounded out the scoring
with two more unearned runs in the top of the ninth. Senior
Jason Cooper (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) and
sophomore Steve Schedin (Lynnfield,
Mass./Lynnfield) each registered RBI singles in the
frame.
Franklin Pierce (9-6, 3-3 NE-10)
returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Merrimack College
for a Conference doubleheader beginning at noon. The Ravens and
Warriors will complete their three-game weekend series on Sunday at
Dr. Pappas Field at 1 p.m. Bentley (5-13, 3-5 NE-10) visits Saint
Anselm College for a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
