Game two of doubleheader rained
out, twinbill at UMass Lowell tomorrow at noon
RINDGE, N.H. (April 30,
2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 29 in this week's
Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll, took a 4-1
lead after two innings and held off UMass Lowell the rest of the
way in posting a 4-3 victory in Northeast-10 Conference baseball
action at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.
Game two of the scheduled
doubleheader was rained out. Franklin Pierce (23-10, 17-7 NE-10)
and UMass Lowell (22-13, 14-10 NE-10) will now play a twinbill
tomorrow at LeLachuer Park in Lowell, Mass., beginning at noon.
Junior second baseman
Mike Chambers (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) finished 2-for-2 with a double and
a walk, driving in three of the four Franklin Pierce runs on the
day. Sophomores Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford
Hills) and Vinny Pennell (Spencer,
Mass./David Prouty) were both 2-4 with a pair of runs
scored as the top three batters in the order hit a combined
6-for-10 in the
contest.
Junior Bryan Duplissie
(East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock) finished 1-4 with an
RBI, while classmate Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy
Name) extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a
1-3 effort.
Senior Bryan Borowski
(Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) picked up his fifth win of
the season (5-1), allowing three earned runs while scattering eight
hits with a strikeout and no walks over eight innings. Junior
Mike Farrell (Russell, Mass./Gateway
Regional) collected his first save of the season with
a perfect ninth.
Freshman Tim Menton
(Swansea, Mass./A. Joseph Case) was the lone UMass
Lowell hitter as he finished 3-for-4. Sophomore Patrick
Wilson (Dracut, Mass./Bishop Guertin) was 1-4 with
two RBI, while senior Miles Page (Dracut, Mass./Central
Catholic) registered a double and run
scored.
Senior left-hander Brad
Laurin (Dracut, Mass./Central Catholic) suffered the
loss (3-5) as he yielded four earned runs on nine hits with nine
strikeouts and three walks in a complete-game effort. After
surrendering four runs over the first two innings, Laurin settled
in and tossed six scoreless frames, retiring 16 of the final 19
batters he faced.
Franklin Pierce took a 2-0 lead in
the first, marking the 18th time this season the Ravens
have scored in the first inning (14-4 record). Olson and Pennell
led off with singles and Chambers scored Olson with a sacrifice fly
to right. After Laurin got a strikeout, Duplissie drove in Pennell
with a single through the left side.
UMass Lowell got one of those runs
back in the second as Page led off with a double and later scored
on a Borowski wild pitch. The Ravens added two more in the home
half of the second. Olson and Pennell singled with two out before
Chambers doubled down the left field line.
The River Hawks answered again with
two in the third. Sophomore Sean Patno (Chelmsford,
Mass./Chelmsford) and Manton singled to lead off the
frame and both scored on a Wilson's single to right with one out.
Borowski settled in from there and retired nine straight batters at
one point and 11 of the last 12 hitters he faced on the rainy
afternoon.
