RINDGE, N.H. (April 30, 2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 29 in this week's Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll, took a 4-1 lead after two innings and held off UMass Lowell the rest of the way in posting a 4-3 victory in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.

Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out. Franklin Pierce (23-10, 17-7 NE-10) and UMass Lowell (22-13, 14-10 NE-10) will now play a twinbill tomorrow at LeLachuer Park in Lowell, Mass., beginning at noon.

Junior second baseman Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) finished 2-for-2 with a double and a walk, driving in three of the four Franklin Pierce runs on the day. Sophomores Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) and Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) were both 2-4 with a pair of runs scored as the top three batters in the order hit a combined 6-for-10 in the contest.

Junior Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock) finished 1-4 with an RBI, while classmate Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a 1-3 effort.

Senior Bryan Borowski (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) picked up his fifth win of the season (5-1), allowing three earned runs while scattering eight hits with a strikeout and no walks over eight innings. Junior Mike Farrell (Russell, Mass./Gateway Regional) collected his first save of the season with a perfect ninth.

Freshman Tim Menton (Swansea, Mass./A. Joseph Case) was the lone UMass Lowell hitter as he finished 3-for-4. Sophomore Patrick Wilson (Dracut, Mass./Bishop Guertin) was 1-4 with two RBI, while senior Miles Page (Dracut, Mass./Central Catholic) registered a double and run scored.

Senior left-hander Brad Laurin (Dracut, Mass./Central Catholic) suffered the loss (3-5) as he yielded four earned runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in a complete-game effort. After surrendering four runs over the first two innings, Laurin settled in and tossed six scoreless frames, retiring 16 of the final 19 batters he faced.

Franklin Pierce took a 2-0 lead in the first, marking the 18th time this season the Ravens have scored in the first inning (14-4 record). Olson and Pennell led off with singles and Chambers scored Olson with a sacrifice fly to right. After Laurin got a strikeout, Duplissie drove in Pennell with a single through the left side.

UMass Lowell got one of those runs back in the second as Page led off with a double and later scored on a Borowski wild pitch. The Ravens added two more in the home half of the second. Olson and Pennell singled with two out before Chambers doubled down the left field line.

The River Hawks answered again with two in the third. Sophomore Sean Patno (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) and Manton singled to lead off the frame and both scored on a Wilson's single to right with one out. Borowski settled in from there and retired nine straight batters at one point and 11 of the last 12 hitters he faced on the rainy afternoon.
