#29 Franklin Pierce Completes Stonehill Sweep, 10-0

Ravens post sixth straight win with regular season series sweep of Stonehill

RINDGE, N.H. (April 28, 2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 29 in Collegiate Baseball magazine's Division II poll for the third-straight week, completed its sweep of a midweek series with Stonehill College with a 10-0 victory in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.

The 10-0 victory this afternoon, follows up Franklin Pierce's commanding 10-2 triumph over Stonehill at Campanelli Stadium, in Brockton, Mass., on Tuesday night. The Ravens are now winners of a season-high matching six-straight, 10-of-its-last-12 and 16-of-19.

Three Franklin Pierce pitchers combined on its fourth shutout of the season. Junior right-hander Tyler Cummings (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) improved to 4-3 with six-plus scoreless innings of work, surrendering just five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Junior Mike Farrell (Russell, Mass./Gateway Regional) and freshman Steve Shepard (Peterborough, N.H./Conval) completed the shutout with a combined three innings of one-hit shutout relief.

Sophomore Kim Hart (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) led the Ravens offensive attack as he hit 3-for-4 with three RBI. Junior Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) was 2-3 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored, while classmate Randy Fenton (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) finished 2-3 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) hit 2-5 with a double and two RBI.

Freshman Ryan Halloran (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) was the lone Stonehill batter with multiple hits as he was 2-for-3. Junior T.J. Piscatelli (Norfolk, Mass./Xavarian) finished 1-3.

Sophomore right-hander Nick SantaBarbara (Middleton, Mass./Masconomet) suffered just his second loss (5-2) of the season for the Chieftains as he was hit for seven earned runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts and three hit batters.

The game was scoreless until Franklin Pierce broke through with a single run in the fourth. Chambers led off the frame with a single through the left side and scored on a Hart single to right.

The Ravens erupted for six runs in the sixth as SantaBarbara hit the first three batters of the inning with pitches to load the bases before Hart drilled a two-run single to right. After a walk and strikeout, Fenton registered an RBI single through the right side, followed by a two-run double by Olson to right. Sophomore Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) capped the rally with an RBI single.

Franklin Pierce tacked on three more in the eighth as Chambers roped a two-run double and junior Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) added an RBI double to extend his current hitting streak to 15 games.

Stonehill's best chance to break the shutout came in the sixth, trailing 1-0, as the Chieftains loaded the bases but could not deliver a two-out hit. The Chieftains also put the first two batters on in the sixth with a walk and a hit batter, but Farrell came on and worked out of the jam for Cummings.

Franklin Pierce (22-9, 16-6 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it hosts N0. 26 Southern Connecticut State University in a battle between the top two teams in the Northeast Region and NE-10 at Dr. Pappas Field at 3:30 p.m. Stonehill (18-14, 11-9 NE-10) visits Bryant University tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
