Ravens walk eight, hit one and leave ten on base to remain
winless in Conference play
ALBANY, N.Y. (March 31,
2005) - The College of Saint Rose jumped out to a 4-0 lead
after two innings and went on to collect a 6-1 victory over
Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 30 in this week's Collegiate
Baseball magazine Division II Coaches poll, in Northeast-10
Conference baseball action at Walker Field at Bleecker Stadium this
afternoon.
Saint Rose jumped out to a 4-0 lead
after two, scoring three in the second, and led 5-0 after four
innings. Franklin Pierce pitchers walked eight and hit one batter
and its offense stranded at least one base runner in each inning,
except the fourth, for a total of ten runners left on base for the
day.
Freshman right-hander
Jeremiah St. Louis (Tupper Lake, N.Y./Tupper
Lake) yielded just the one earned run, scattering
five hits with three strikeouts and three walks over seven innings
of work to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Senior Josh Colafemina
(Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) was 2-for-3 at the
plate with a double, stolen base and two RBI, while sophomore
Gary Miller (Prospect, Conn./Wolcott) was
1-2 with a double and two RBI.
Junior Bryan Duplissie
(East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock Regional) finished 1-3
for the Ravens with a double and RBI, while freshman
Matt Anderson (Medford, Mass./Medford)
was also 1-3. Junior Mike Chambers (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) extended his team-leading hitting
streak to 12 games, having hit safely in every game so far this
season, with a single in the first.
Sophomore right-hander
Eric Grabowski (Worcester, Mass./David
Prouty) suffered the loss on the mound (1-1) as he
was touched for five runs, four earned, on four hits and five walks
with eight strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Colafemina led off the bottom of
the first with a double and scored on a groundout by senior
Jean-Francois DuFour (Beauharnois,
Quebec). Miller roped a two-run double to spark the
Golden Knights second and later scored on a Grabowski wild pitch.
Colafemina drove in senior David Stringham
(Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady), who led off the
fourth with a walk, to give Saint Rose a 5-0 lead.
Franklin Pierce got its lone run in
the sixth as junior Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy
Name) drew a two-out walk and scored on Duplissie's
double after reaching second on a wild pitch. Saint Rose tacked on
a sixth run in the eighth when Colafemina drew a bases-loaded walk
with two out.
Franklin Pierce (6-6, 0-3 NE-10) is
scheduled to return to action tomorrow when it travels to
Springfield, Mass., to face American International College in
Conference play at 3 p.m. The Ravens home opener is now scheduled
for Thursday, April 7, when they host Bentley College at 3:30 p.m.
Saint Rose (10-9, 1-0 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm College on Saturday
for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
