Minnesota-Duluth Keeps Franklin Pierce Reeling

Bulldogs sweep to send Ravens to third-straight defeat after topping top-ranked Tampa

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 24, 2005) - The University of Minnesota-Duluth swept a non-conference doubleheader against Franklin Pierce, receiving votes in this week's Collegiate Baseball magazine and National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) Division II polls, at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic this afternoon.

Minnesota-Duluth, which has won four-straight, dealt Franklin Pierce its second and third-straight losses following a 4-1 triumph over top-ranked University of Tampa on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs took game one, 4-1, before posting a 10-5 triumph in the nightcap.            

In game one, Minnesota-Duluth used two home runs to spark a three-run sixth and collect the victory. Freshman Ty Fadness (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) was hit by a pitch and junior Tim Garceau (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) followed with a two-run homer to break a 1-1 tie. Senior Nate Cermak (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) added a solo shot to provide the Bulldogs with an added insurance run.

Freshman Kyle Zweber (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) picked up the win for UMD, as he yielded just an earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Senior Bryan Borowski (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) was pinned with the loss (1-1), as he was touched for four earned runs on six hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over 5.2 innings.

Junior Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock Regional) provided all of the Franklin Pierce offense with a solo homer in the sixth that tied the score and he finished 1-for-2 with a walk. Classmate Elliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) was 1-3 with a walk a stolen base, while sophomore Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) finished 1-3 with a steal.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the third as junior Nate Taran (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) walked and scored on an RBI single from classmate Greg Aker (Superior, Wis./Superior).

Minnesota-Duluth made the most of eight hits in posting a 12-7 victory in the nightcap. The Bulldogs took the lead for good with a six-run sixth with the benefit of just three hits as Franklin Pierce pitching loaded the bases with three walks.

Freshmen Alex Conboy (Silver Bay, Minn./Silver Bay) and Andrew Heieie (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) sparked the frame with back-to-back two-run singles after the bases were loaded with free passes. After a fourth walk, junior Tom Paitich (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) delivered a two-run double to give the Bulldogs an 11-6 lead.

Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Elliott Shea reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch before junior Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) smacked his third home run of the season. 

UMD got a run back in the top of the third, but the Ravens got it back in the home half as junior Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) followed a Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) single with an RBI double.

Minnesota-Duluth scored three unearned runs in the fourth to take their first lead (4-3), then added a fifth run in the fifth for a two-run advantage. However, Franklin Pierce answered with a three-runs in the bottom of the frame to regain a one-run lead (6-5). Shea doubled in Olson (double) and scored on a Hayes two-bagger, before Bryan Duplissie added an RBI single.

Freshman Steve Stocki (Billerica, Mass./Shawsheen Tech) suffered the loss in relief for the Ravens as he yielded two walks that resulted in the go-ahead runs in two-thirds of an inning of work. Sophomore starter Daniel Fournier (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) yielded four unearned runs on three hits and three walks in 3.1 innings.

Hayes finished 2-3 at the plate for the Ravens, with a homer, double and two RBI, while Olson was 3-3 with a double, homer, RBI and three runs scored.
