PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (March 19, 2005) - After seeing three attempts at a season opener postponed due to a late winter in the northeast, Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 28 in this week's Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II coaches poll, finally opened its season with a sweep of Molloy College in a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon

Franklin Pierce pitchers combined on two shutouts on the afternoon, while Raven base runners ran rampant on the Molloy catchers, stealing 17 bases on the day, including a school-record 13 in the nightcap alone.

Franklin Pierce collected a 9-0 triumph in game one, limiting Molloy to just three hits, while rapping out 13 safeties of its own. Senior right-hander Bryan Borowski (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) combined with sophomore Neil Cacciola (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) for a three-hit shutout for the Ravens.

Borowski, who carried a no-hitter into the fourth, yielded just a hit with five walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings of work. Cacciola finished the game off with two innings of shutout relief, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Junior Elliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) helped pace the Ravens offense as he hit 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Classmate Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) was 3-4 with a double, RBI and three runs, while sophomore Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) finished 2-5 with an RBI, run and three stolen bases.

Junior Dennis Conroy (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) took the loss for Molloy as he yielded six runs, five earned, on 11 hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

Franklin Pierce jumped on top with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Junior Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) smacked a two-run single that scored Shea and Chambers, who both reached with singles.

The Ravens added single runs in the second and sixth, before breaking the game open with a pair in the seventh and three in the eighth. Chambers roped an RBI double that scored Shea (single) before scoring on a Pennell single in the seventh. Shea added an RBI single to score sophomore Eric Grabowski (Worcester, Mass./David Prouty), before junior Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock) rounded out the scoring with a two-run double that plated Shea and Chambers (hit-by-pitch).
