Ravens pitching shows early season dominance with two
shutouts Raven base runners swipe 17 bases on the day, a
record 13 in the nightcap
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (March
19, 2005) - After seeing three attempts at a season opener
postponed due to a late winter in the northeast, Franklin Pierce,
ranked No. 28 in this week's Collegiate Baseball magazine
Division II coaches poll, finally opened its season with a sweep of
Molloy College in a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon
Franklin Pierce pitchers combined
on two shutouts on the afternoon, while Raven base runners ran
rampant on the Molloy catchers, stealing 17 bases on the day,
including a school-record 13 in the nightcap alone.
Franklin Pierce collected a 9-0
triumph in game one, limiting Molloy to just three hits, while
rapping out 13 safeties of its own. Senior right-hander
Bryan Borowski (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury)
combined with sophomore Neil Cacciola (Wakefield,
Mass./Wakefield) for a three-hit shutout for the
Ravens.
Borowski, who carried a no-hitter
into the fourth, yielded just a hit with five walks and eight
strikeouts in seven innings of work. Cacciola finished the game off
with two innings of shutout relief, allowing two hits and a walk
with two strikeouts.
Junior Elliott Shea
(Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) helped pace the Ravens offense
as he hit 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Classmate
Mike Chambers (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) was 3-4 with a double, RBI and
three runs, while sophomore Vinny Pennell (Spencer,
Mass./David Prouty) finished 2-5 with an RBI, run and
three stolen bases.
Junior Dennis Conroy
(West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) took the loss
for Molloy as he yielded six runs, five earned, on 11 hits and two
walks with eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Franklin Pierce jumped on top with
a pair of runs in the top of the first. Junior Shawn
Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) smacked a two-run
single that scored Shea and Chambers, who both reached with
singles.
The Ravens added single runs in the
second and sixth, before breaking the game open with a pair in the
seventh and three in the eighth. Chambers roped an RBI double that
scored Shea (single) before scoring on a Pennell single in the
seventh. Shea added an RBI single to score sophomore
Eric Grabowski (Worcester, Mass./David
Prouty), before junior Bryan Duplissie
(East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock) rounded out the
scoring with a two-run double that plated Shea and Chambers
(hit-by-pitch).

Franklin Pierce completed the
twinbill shutout with a 5-0 victory in the nightcap. The Ravens set
a program record with 13 stolen bases in the
contest.
Sophomore right-hander
Daniel Fournier (Worcester, Mass./Holy
Name) combined with classmates Eric Grabowski and
Tom Gilmore (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller
Place) for a six-hit shutout. Fournier yielded four
hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings, before
Gilmore and Grabowski finished the game off with a scoreless inning
of work each.
Shea again led the offense, as he
was 3-for-5 with a double, triple, stolen base and three RBI.
Pennell was 3-4 with a walk and two steals, while Hayes finished
2-4 with a double, RBI and two steals. Sophomore
Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford
Hills) finished 2-4 with a double and two steals.
Junior Derek Reed
(Massapequa, N.Y./Nassau CC) took the loss, yielding
three earned runs on 12 hits with three walks and two strikeouts in
four innings of work.
Again, Franklin Pierce took control
with two runs in the first. Olson singled and scored on a Shea
double, who scored on a sac fly by Bryan Duplissie. Olson doubled
and stole third in the second before scoring on a Shea single for a
3-0 lead after two innings.
The Ravens rounded out the scoring
with a pair in the eighth. Mike Chambers walked and scored on a
wild pitch after reaching third on an error. Duplissie (reached
fielder's choice) scored on an RBI single from Hayes.
