Hughes double leads Ravens to
eighth-straight victory
RINDGE, N.H. (October 13,
2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 6 in this week's
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas
Division II poll, held a two-goal lead at the break and pulled away
late to post a 5-1 victory over Pace University in Northeast-10
Conference women's soccer action at Sodexho Field this afternoon.
Senior All-American
Sonya Hughes (Balbriggan, Ireland)
notched her first multi-goal match of the season as she netted a
pair, while juniors Alex Scavo (Toronto,
Ontario/Brother Andre) and Leanne Bowler
(Clonalvy, Ireland) along with sophomore
Taryn Welker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) each
scored second half markers for the Ravens.
Hughes opened the scoring when she
collected a loose ball on the left side and chipped it into the
upper right corner from 12-yards out at 21:53. She added her second
with 50-seconds to play before the intermission when she took a
pass from freshman Ann Foley (Rockland,
Mass./Rockland) and blasted a shot from the top of
the six that slipped through the hands of Pace junior goalkeeper
Jocelyne Durando (Monroe,
N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and into the
goal.
The Ravens put the match out of
reach with three goals in a 13-minute span late in regulation.
Bowler scored her first of the year when she collected a defensive
turnover and chipped it past the keeper from 18-yards out at 74:36.
Scavo netted her fifth of the
season when a serve from junior Colleen Callahan
(Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) from the right side
was directed towards the center of the goal off the head of
freshman Rebecca Westbury (Northbridge,
Mass./Northbridge), catching Durando off her line,
for an open net shot at 75:45. Welker rounded out the Ravens
scoring when she broke in past two defenders and fired a low shot
from close range into the lower left corner at 86:54.
Pace salvaged a late goal with just
1:01 remaining when Franklin Pierce sophomore goalkeeper
Jenna Mello (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) couldn't corral a serve from the
left side by senior Marta Anderson-Winchell
(Bloomington, N.Y./Pine Bush) that fell to the feet
of junior Kelly Fazio (Ann Arbor,
Mich./Saline) for a tip-in and her 12th
goal of the year - setting a new single-season goal and scoring (27
points) record for the Setters. Anderson-Winchell's assist made her
the program's new all-time scoring leader with 48 career points.
Durando made seven saves, while
yielding four goals, over 78:38 before giving way to
Tess Bair (Gaston, Ore./Forest Grove) who
did not register a stop, while yielding a goal, over the final
11:22. Mello finished with one save for Franklin Pierce, who
out-shot the Setters, 21-3. The Ravens also saw their shutout
streak ended at four matches, which covered 535:39.
