Ravens losing streak reaches season-long four games Teikyo
Post awarded forfeit victory in game two
FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 18,
2004) - Caldwell College, ranked eighth in this week's
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Northeast
Region poll, rallied from a 5-2 deficit after four innings for a
6-5 victory over Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 4 in the NCBWA
Northeast Region poll, in non-conference baseball action at the
Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic this morning.
Franklin Pierce's second game of
the day against Teikyo Post University was called in the top of the
sixth, with the Eagles holding a 5-3 lead, with the umpires
awarding Teikyo Post a forfeit victory. The Ravens had filed a
protest just before the game was halted, but Tournament officials
did not uphold the Franklin Pierce protest as "the umpires had not
informed Teikyo Post of the protest." The Eagles receive a 7-0
victory under NCAA forfeit rules for a seven inning
game.
Against Caldwell, the Cougars
scored two runs in the top of the seventh and held Franklin Pierce
scoreless in the bottom of the frame to pull out the victory.
Caldwell knotted the score when sophomore catcher
Landon Viessy (Bayside, N.J./Cardozo)
scored when Franklin Pierce starter Daniel Fournier
(Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) threw the ball over
third baseman Garrett Olson's (Norway, Maine/Oxford
Hills) head in an attempt to get Viessy out at third.
Junior Fadul Bambino (Astoria, N.Y./Queensborough
CC) walked and scored the winning run on a fielder's
choice to second.
Fournier suffered his first
collegiate loss (2-1) as he allowed six runs, five earned, on seven
hits with five walks and eight strikeouts in the complete-game
effort.
Junior Eric Cavers
(Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) led the Ravens
offense by hitting 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Sophomore Mike Chambers (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) was 3-4 with two RBI, while Olson
finished 2-4.
Franklin Pierce scored two runs in
the fourth to break open a 5-2 lead on the Cougars. Sophomore
Randy Fenton (Worcester, Mass./Doherty)
walked and scored on an RBI single from Cavers, who later scored on
a single by Chambers.
Franklin Pierce (5-10) rounds out
its spring break trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Molloy
College in Homestead, Fla., beginning at noon. Caldwell (7-3)
battles Minnesota-Duluth tomorrow at 9 a.m.
