Ravens use big second-half
defensive effort to dispatch Owls
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (November
23, 2004) - Franklin Pierce limited Southern Connecticut
State University to 22.2-percent (6-27) shooting from the field in
the second-half to break open a two-point game and collect a 68-51
victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at the
Moore Fieldhouse tonight.
Freshman swingman
Mitchell Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas/Cushing
Academy) led Franklin Pierce with 13 points, aided by
nine-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line, and six rebounds,
while sophomore guard Darryl Minifield (Brookline,
Mass./Brookline) added 13 points on 4-7 shooting from
the field, including 2-3 from three-point range. Junior
Justin Powell (Brookline,
Mass./Brookline) contributed 12 points and six
rebounds, while junior Pierre Sully (Jamaica Plains,
Mass./North Cambridge) chipped in nine
points.
Sophomore Ernie Brown
(Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Mt. Vernon) was the lone Southern
Connecticut player in double-figures as he totaled ten points, on
4-9 shooting, five rebounds and two steals. Freshman
Greg Boose (Williamstown,
N.J./Willingboro) added nine points off the bench,
while sophomore P.J. Isaacson (Sydney,
Australia) chipped in nine points.
Franklin Pierce limited Southern
Connecticut to 29.2% (14-48) shooting for the contest, but the
Ravens didn't shoot particularly well themselves, finishing at
34.5% (20-58), including 23.1% (3-13) from three-point range, after
hitting at 41.4% (12-29) in the first half.
Franklin Pierce (2-1, 1-0 NE-10) is
back in action next Wednesday, December 1, when it travels to
Manchester to face in-state rivals Southern New Hampshire
University at 7:30 p.m. Southern Connecticut (0-2, 0-2 NE-10)
visits American International College on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
