Carey nets two free-throws with
7.8-seconds left to hold off Ravens comeback
MANCHESTER, N.H. (December
1, 2004) - Southern New Hampshire University held off a
Franklin Pierce comeback from nine-points down with 6:36 to play
and posted a 59-57 victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's
basketball action at the SNHU Fieldhouse tonight.
Junior guard John
Baiano (Staten Island, N.Y./St.
Peter's) led the Southern New Hampshire attack with
ten points, 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Classmate
Miguel Gonzalez (Jamaica,
N.Y./Holy Cross) and freshman Sam Carey
(Manchester, N.H./Central)
each netted 14 points for the Penmen. Sophomore K.J.
Creamer (Akron,
Ohio/Revere) chipped in nine points and six boards.
Freshman Mitchell
Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas/Cushing
Academy) led Franklin Pierce with 16 points, six
rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior Justin
Powell (Brookline,
Mass./Brookline) added 12 points (all second half) on
four-of-seven shooting from the field and 4-6 at the line to go
with four boards. Freshman Dominick Johnson
(Los Angeles, Calif./A.B.
Miller) chipped in 11 points and a team-high nine
boards.
Southern New Hampshire took
advantage of 14 Franklin Pierce turnovers in the first half to take
a 36-29 lead into the locker room at halftime. Trailing by nine
with 6:36 to play after a Carey lay-up, the Ravens rallied with an
8-1 run to close within two (56-54) after a Tom Sadler
(Oxford, England/Farmington
(N.H.)) lay-up with 4:03 to play.
Neither team scored over the next
two minutes, but the Penmen extended their lead to three (57-54) on
a J.J. Harvey (Albany,
N.Y./Siena) free-throw with 2:16 left in regulation.
Johnson knotted the game for the
first time since the score was 4-4 2:37 into the contest with a
deep three-pointer with 42-seconds on the clock.
Carey gathered an offensive rebound
on the other end and was fouled with seven-seconds to play. The
freshman calmly drained both free-throw attempts and Mitchell
missed a running three at the buzzer to end the game.
Franklin Pierce (2-2, 1-1 NE-10) is
back in action for its first home game of the season when it hosts
UMass Lowell at 3:30 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (4-1, 3-1 NE-10)
is idle until Saturday, December 11, when it hosts UMass Lowell at
2 p.m.
