Franklin Pierce Slips Past American International, 1-0

Guertin ties program record with seventh career shutout

Chelsey Munson Chelsey Munson scored the lone goal of the game on Sunday at American International.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 17, 2004) - The Franklin Pierce field hockey team defeated host American International College 1-0 in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon. The Ravens swept the season series between the two clubs, as they also upended the Yellow Jackets 3-2 in a home match earlier this season. With the win, Franklin Pierce improves its overall mark to 5-8 and their conference record to 4-8. American International falls to 2-14 overall and 2-12 in league play following their final home game of the regular season.

Senior Chelsey Munson (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) continued her clutch play for Franklin Pierce, as she netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season 10:38 into the second half. The unassisted goal was Munson's second game-winner of the year versus American International and third game-winner of the season. It also marked the fourth time that she found the cage versus the Yellow Jackets this season, as she tallied a hat trick the last time these two teams met.

Junior goalkeeper Brandi Guertin (Bellingham, Mass /Bellingham) was dominant in net for the Ravens, saving all nine shots that she faced en route to her fourth win of the season. With her second shutout of the season, Guertin tied former Raven Kasey McClements' ('02) program record of seven career shutouts. Freshman Cindy Armand (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) suffered her 12th loss of the year despite saving ten shots for the Yellow Jackets.

Franklin Pierce (5-8, 4-8 NE-10) will return to action on Wednesday, as they host Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup. American International (2-14, 2-12 NE-10) will also play on Wednesday when they travel to Bryant University for a league match beginning at 4 p.m.
